i just painted a two-sided 3' x 8' banner --white lettering on a green background. Of course, the 2-sided material doesn't come in green, so I ordered up a white banner. So, would you have cut in the green and left the white letters, or painted the whole thing green and then applied white vinyl or painted on white letters?
Here's how i did it -- and the time it took. I'd really appreciate some feedback from you experienced folk. I used two different methods to do my own time check:
design, plot, and electropounce: 60 minutes
wipe with Rapid-prep, pounce and cut-in with green Deka (water-based) paint. I used a large Mack quill (water-based series) and 3" roller: 90 minutes
Ti-Cote (9" roller), pounce and cut-in with green 1-Shot (using 3/4" fitch and 2" cutter): 100 minutes
My experience is that the Ti-Coat didn't level out very well off the roller, but the 1-Shot was a lot easier to use than the Deka. I thinned the Deka with Rapid-Tac (a Superfrog trick) and I thinned the 1-shot with their Hardener/activator.
4 hours 10 minutes total
The Deka was dry to the touch in a few minutes, and I could hang it outside in the sun to finish. After 20 minutes (coffee break) it was dry enough to bring inside and flop it over to do the second side. The 1-shot is still tacky to the touch after an hour, and I'm guessing it will be dry by tomorrow morning when I need to deliver it. So, both methods took almost the same ammount of time, but have different advantages and disadvantages.
Here's the layout -- its a pretty simple job.

Sorry I can't help with paint but I would have cut white vinyl, ordered two green banners and hemmed them together back-to-back. Would probaly take 1 hour.

Scooter, The white letters can be achieved using a paint mask. Eliminates two steps: pouncing & lettering.
Wipe the banner with alcohol. Lay paint mask. Now, with a shop rag, dunk part of it in the tie-coat, and wipe down the banner wit a *thin* coat. Your putting way too much, Bro...
The reason I lay the mask first is because exposed tie coat seems to attract dust and dirt.
I hope you or anyone else takes offense... Two words, EZ layout. Design, plot, weed & mask 30 min. Lay paint mask, tie-coat (btw dries in two or three minutes) and paint green; another 30 min. Cost: $179.US ("I know; I need to charge more)

Richard -- it seems to me that weeding and masking the paintmask would have take me as long as pouncing (10 minutes), and would have cost me more for the materials, so that's why i tried this way. maybe it was the wrong choice. i charged $275 for this job. i guess you should do the production work and i should do the sales-- we'd BOTH make more money.
Steve --i didn't know about McCullogh -- my local supplier doesn't have 2-sided green, and neither does Ameriban.
i thought about using paint mask, but wouldn't it have just been easier to paint it all green and apply white letters? -- paint mask costs me as much as 3-year white vinyl.
