Have a cedar sandblasting job. Would like to stain the wood this time instead of painting. Anything i need to know. Probably stupid question. Do i need to prime before staining? Or just apply stain to bare wood like any other. Will be gold leafing the raised text. Should i resin epoxy the raised effect to get a nice smooth guilding surface?

Thanks all...Go AMERICA!!

Hi Matthew,

For cedar, give a look at the oil-bases Cabot stains: http://www.cabotstain.com/
You can find it in a semi-solid or solid. The semi-solid should last about 3-5 years, and be easy to touch up in the future. The stain needs no primer and should be applied immediately after you blast the wood.

Good luck,

Marty

You probably want to stick with a "lacquer type"
stain and clear system, or "urethane".

Something that will not have an oil residue on surfase when dry.
