I hate to be a doubter, but then my last name is Thomas . I think it's a well executed painting by someone like (if not) Dru Blair. Looks a bit too clean or something. Maybe I'm wrong. NICE!!

WOW!! I stand totally corrected! That is so cool! Not knowing about this phenomenon beforehand, I never realized there was such a thing as that! I'm astounded!! Lots of cool pics of other jets on the website Victor linked to. (below)

"The F-14 Tomcat in photo at the right has generated a condensation cloud as it does a transonic flyby. It is frequently stated that such condensation illustrates the region of supersonic flow or sometimes the shock waves generated in the transonic regime. While the general pattern is indeed similar to that seen in many transonic flows, there is nothing in the physics which would suggest that the region of condensation must be coincident with the region of supersonic flow.
A more sophisticated view is that this has nothing ( directly ) to do with the occurrence of supersonic flow or shock waves. Rather, it is an illustration of the Prandtl-Glauert singularity discussed in most classes on compressible flow."
More than any of us wanted to know. It's still a real pic. Vic G
PS there's an exciting MPEG of an F14 doing a supersonic flyby of an aircraft carrier at this link at the bottom left corner http://www.globemaster.de/airextreme/jets.html The fog cloud comes and goes, but it is there.

amazing photos on that globemaster site link...but what's with the movie of a mechanic being sucked into a jet engine- then lives!? He is shown "a few hours later" with what seem to be minor injuries...?

This happens all the time off of the B-1's wingtips, when they climb, or make turns, setting up for landing. It has to be somewhat humid for this to occur, you won't see the vapor on dry, hot days. It has to do with super-compressed air, over certain areas of the jet, or what Vic said.
I have witnessed, (several times), the exact same thing as the pic of the F-18, on the B-1's. We used to have a jet buzz the runway, just below the sound barrier on Friday afternoons. On the humid days, it would look like the thing exploded right in front of you!
I've got 10- 4X8's, a HDU sign, and a motorcycle tank to flame staring me in the face when I get to work this morning. Running a shift with 25 guys, pre-flighting and recovering jets all day, was a hell of alot less stress!

I thought that the actual sonic boom was caused when the arcraft pulls out of a dive at supersonic speed, and the "cone" or shockwave continues on striking the earth. If you've ever heard one, there is a noticeable "boom-boom" as the thing bounces. Does that happen over water??
Airplanes break the "sound barrier" all the time without causing sonic booms.

Without getting too complicated... You know how you have to drain the water from air compressors? Same thing happening here. When you compress air, you also compress the water in it. Squeezing air with water vapor in the air in a gas form causes it to change to liquid form. (Same way boiling water causes it to turn to gas, only in reverse) The forward motion of the aircraft produces a compression in the air (and therefore the water in it) in front of the aircraft that causes the water in the air to spontaneously condense. After the aircraft passes the water in the air turns back into vapor because the air pressure the aircraft produced in front of it no longer exists at that point. It doesn't really have much to do with supersonic speed. It has more to do with air temperture at point of compression. Everybody get that?

Yea, I got that J.T.. That was the first time I saw that. Neat video Victor, had to watch it several times.

Tony, I think the photo on the site you linked to was probably used to demonstrate the sonic boom add on. Im pretty sure the photo is real, as there are several more of this type on the link victor put up. You should download the mpeg he speaks of. Its pretty far out to see it happen.

Yea John, I spoke too soon. Although some of these addons for flightsim are pretty real, I downloaded the sonic boom addon and all it is is the actual sound from a sonic boom when you fly a jet in the sim past the speed of sound. I thought it had the vapor effect. There are lots of addons that have smoke trials, vapor trails, fire in the engine etc. I thought this was one of them. Whoops.
Pretty neat videos.

While the effects mentioned certainly are cool, let's not forget just how dangerous quick and unexpected compressed air can be... In this case, involving inflatable watercraft...
You may want to right-click and save (and then run it in your favorite mpg player) rather than just clicking the link and running it - I tried just clicking it from here and it took forever and then Real Player didn't even play it... grrrrr
Just about fell off my chair crackin up remembering a scene from childhood.
