Just bought XP upgrade. However all the warnings about incompatability with certain drivers pulled me up and made me abort the upgrade.
Anyone out there know if Signlab 4.95 has any incompatability issues with XP? And if so are any drivers available? Before I dive in.
Thanks in advance

Hi Don,
No info for you on the drivers, but out of the 3 XP upgrades I've seen, 2 of them were a disaster and one was just a bit bodgy.
In all cases I've come in after the event so I don;t know if maybe they were due to operator error but it might be worth doing a backup and full installation.

With XP, DO NOT UPGRADE! You can still use the Upgrade XP disk, but instead, do a 'clean' install. Just follow the prompts when you insert the disk.

Caution! This will re-format your hard drive, so be sure and back up all your data files first.

XP is a great OS if it is done this way.

Working out of DOS some years back, I NEVER had a problem. Then came WINDOWS 3.0.....3.1. Made things easier, except for the crashes. Then WIN95.
The initial one was CRAP, but they fixed most of the problems with 'upgrades'. Just when 95 was working OK, out comes 98! .......MORE PROBLEMS! I get THAT working right, and here comes ME.....2000.....then XP!.....I REFUSE........I'VE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!If my 98 don't get the job done....SCREW IT!....NO MORE UPGRADING ANYTHING!!!!!...(I hope I can stick by what I say!)

you will have a choice when installing XP..

the choice is between FAT32 or NTFS file systetm..

In most cases FAT32 is a good choice and is much easier to work with if you ever decide that XP is not for you. Going back to another OS is much easier. NTFS has very little enhancements that an average user will really need. The one point it has over FAT32 is tht NTFS has more security that is recommeneded if you run a network with very sensitve data. (IE website with a shopping system)

If you decide to use XP and select the NTFS (file system) be sure to disconnect any slave drives on your system. There is a report that says the slave drives may be corrupted or become unreadable.

Thanks all!
I have heard that a dual boot system might be the way to be able to use XP, as I have bought a video editing programme and I hear that XP manages RAM a lot better that win98.
However how does one install a dual Boot System and are there problems with that?
Don

ive had those removeable h/d caddy's for years....lov em. ive never just upgraded o/s's. always have upgraded h/d and then just change it.
i got a new computer IWLL m/b, and a 4 bayed case, 2 of these are removeable caddy's. one is for drive c: and the other is drive d:. the m/b automatically finds the hard drive on boot up. like right now iam building a 40 gig in drive c: and pulling info from my 30 gig(older h/d)drive d: onto the new 40 gig. i can also take and 80 gig h/d that i have and do a total copy of both of the 30 and 40 gig for backup!!!! and doing a backup copy from h/d to h/d is fast!!!!!

i have to pop in to defend the best OS i have used. i have my trials with win95 and then the disaster of win98 which still gives me the chills when i think of the grief it caused me.

WinXP pro was a long haul to install but i went through with all the driver updates and have had a smooth run since then.

Do you know it comes with a lot of inbuilt drivers such as drivers that run my zip disk, my scanner, my CD writer (this is a gem of just drag the files onto the Icon for the drive and burn away and it leaves the disk open to more writing)

I am networked to my old system with win98 and i run a scanner, plotter, printer, smart card reader, ISDN modem, zip, floppy, cd, cdwriter all off the machine which is a pentium3 933meghz with 512 megs of ram and the thing is solid !

Miles..I agree..I am finding XP to be just as stable as 2000. A far cry from Win 98!!!
