in side i put an IWILL KK400 m/b, XP2100 AMD CPU, 256 DDR 333mghz ram and i also bought a new 40 gig h/d, which i need to install all new. got all this and price tag of $385.00 and boy do this SUCKER FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have had a 350 CYRIX(old dont make em any more) it worked great got 3 years outa it. iam a happy camper now!!!!!

Hey Joe, congrats!
Question:

Will that 256mb of DDR RAM outperform 512mb of PC133 RAM?

yes wayne....if i remember corectly the older ram only ran at 86 or up to 133 mghz depending on your m/b bus. this DDR is about 3 times faster.
santo yes i just used the older h/d i had(with 98SE on it)iam building(installing O/S and programs)on the 40 GIG i bought with this. and yep WIN98SE. this way i know everthing will work and i will still install corel 7!!!!!! rock solid, no gliches or problems.

Jeez Joe .. why don't you go ahead and Install DOS 5.0 and corel 2.0 It'd really fly then [Wink]

hehe ... I respect your opinion with regards to sticking with what works, but Corel 9.0 was rock solid, I understand 10 was good (never tried it & I'm gonna wait for SP2 before rolling out Corel 11)and Win2k is a head above Win98se (much as I loved it), I think you're giving up a lot of good features to stick with your convictions...

I agree on going with W2K. Yet I'd go ahead and opt for XP, since it's a prettier version of 2000. I'd also opt for 512 megs of ram and a larger hard drive. With the prices these days, it's not too many extra $$$. Win98 doesn't give back memory when it's done using it like windows 2000 does, ontop of the fact that 2000 can update drivers on-the-fly without reboots too often. Same for XP. I administer a network of about 25 computers here at our place and I'm slowly moving systems to Windows 2000 because of the better security features. I'd opt for XP but unfortunatley we run an application that's not kosher with XP yet.

I am sure that one of the reasons Joe likes Win 98SE is because his cutter drivers DO work perfectly with it. However, the latest driver from Roland has been working without a glitch for me for the last 3 or 4 weeks, so I can pretty much assure ya, Joe, that it is a bug free, compatible driver.

By sticking with Corel 7 you are also losing out on a lot of neat, time saving features that are part of later versions of Corel.

i like the smaller h/ds.....reason being i have removable hard drives. i can have 1 h/d with win98se, one with win 2000 one with xp loaded on a seperate drive. depending on which one i want to play in i just pull out one and insert the other sorta like the old 8 track cassettes. as for corel....well i cut from mine, and design in mine. 9 had some problems with text to curves, 10 is a lot of program, meg wize that i dont have a use for. 7 is the version before corel added all the extras from XARA.
dave i got ROLANDS VERSION 2.60 drivers. they aslo work fine in 98se.....hehehehe

I'm contemplating buying one with a Pentium4 2.4G processor, 512mg SDRAM, 40G hard drive, CDRW, 64mg video card, and Win XP for $650. Is that a bad deal?

The one I have now is 500mhz processor, 512 RAM, 8mg video card, 12G hard drive and WIN 98SE....S L O W.

What is the best way to copy all of the files ... practically everything on the hard drive.....onto the new system??

good price wayne....i just prefer to put mine together with the pices i choose. your 550 is slow because of th h/d which is ATA 66 probably and 5400 rpm and the 8 meg video card. ian runin a 32 meg in this one, wife has a 64 meg, both are ATI. as for files on a new hard , i choose to build the h/d with a fresh install of the O/S. and then load the programs i want and then bring in the files to those programs.

Wayne ... If you don't want to network the two computers, the easiest way to transfer files off the old drive and onto the new would be to set the jumper on the old drive to slave, install it in the new computer, and copy the files drive to drive. When done, remove the old drive, reset the jumper to where it was (master or cable select) and reinstall it in the old computer. No harm done to o/s in old or new system.

Note : I would copy data files only, I'd prefer to install applications/programs from scratch. you may copy custom configuration files for an application only if you know exactly what you're doing.

I'd look also at RDRAM or DDR SDRAM, much faster than older SDRAM. Also of importance is the system bus speed, 400mhz or 533mhz is what you should be looking for. I agree with OP on the video card, (would have been a good upgrade for the old system), I would think a fast 64meg video card as a minimum starting point for a new system.

Joe you mustn’t do it! Your devotion to seven is one of life’s constants I thought I could rely on.
After all – In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they're only made of clay, but you and Corel7 . . .

Don't do it Joe! Check everything else, the computer's components, the shop's humidity, the alignment of the planets, but don't abandon the greatest breakthrough in the last 100 years; Corel 7.
We can get through this.

Bad news, Joe.

Your computer just became obsolete five minutes ago. The PC Patrol will be by shortly to pick it up for recycling.
