I finally recieved my patterns from Joe this past week. He did send them out right away but the mail is very slow across the border especially these days.
And I have started my small part of the project.
I rubbed graphite on the back of the paper patterns and then traced over the pattern to transfer it to my pieces of basswood.
I used my trusty jigsaw to cut them out.
And now the fun part starts.
This will be the first time I can recall that I am building something to someone elses plan. It should be a real challenge!
I invite others to post pics of their parts in progress here soon. You have started the pieces right????

I recieved the routed blanks last Fri. From Phil Ghi, of GHI SIGN. Like each of us, he is offering his capabilities and support on this project. I have carved a sample letter on each piece as a guide. Terry's, Doug's, Chris's and Shirley's parts were shipped out today. Whew!...Now I have to get going on my part.
Fourteen craftsmen, from Quebec to FL, to TX, To HI to BC......what a big town, this letterville!
Each part of this project will challenge each of us and we will all be dependent on each other.
"The whole is only as good as it's parts"
Thank you for joining this adventure and for....."Keeping the Spirit alive"

My collegue, Pam (who is going to Quebec with me) has enthusiastically volunteered to work on it with me.
Just an opportunity to hang out here... it's actually a mini-meet whenever we get together.I'm so lucky to have such a great friend, who lives so close, and LOVES to get together and be creative.
We both attended the meet in Cornwall (a first for both of us) and Pam is always up for helping out ,when I get behind or overly busy. When I told her about the FKAB carving...I got a big WooHoo!
We can't wait to get started, and August seems so far off.

Hoping to see them soon. What kind of finish will these get? Did I hear (read) something about gold leaf? If so I will definitely need to find some help before I begin. Pre-Rookie Leaf guy.

I received my blanks a couple of week ago. I am still trying to cram 37 years of practice into a couple of weeks before I make any chips with my pieces. But fear not. They will be done in time. I hope to deliver them in person to Joe at Mass Mayhem this May.
Dan, as I make progress, I will surely post pics here.
I am really getting into carving! Only 4 stitches so far since the Chisel Jam though, but I still have all my digits….

Everyone should have their parts now, although I haven't heard from Shirley and Chris?
Dan, those brushes look GREAT!! It looks like you are way ahead of the curve!
Terry, how do you like that ribbon? Pretty severe, huh? The top ribbons are going to be another layer high , I think I'll make a mock-up before I go full size.
Alan, yup, ya gonna have to learn guilding....but have no fear.....with Bill Riedel near by, you'll have one of the best guilders/teachers in the biz!!! I'll bet if you ask real nice, he'll give you an assist.
Joe, Joe, Joe.....did you forget Jem #1? "Always carve like a coward" You have to stop pointing those tools at yourself...
I hope to have the top ribbons well under way by Mayhem....chomping on those will be a good demo and maybe I can get a little help from my friends! Besides Joe, is anyone else going?
Well, I guess the fun has begun....thanks everyone!

On the gold question....most of us are going to have to guild their parts. The color of the finish can differ according to many variables. In an effort to get some consistancy, I'm trying to eliminate as many variables as possible. (1 Shot fast dry size and Crocidile leaf). Although each maker uses 23k gold, for some reason, the color of each differs alot. I just happen to like the color of crocidile. I haven't started begging a supplier yet, (I hate that part), but I will get on it next week (did I say I hate that part?)
What brand does everyone use now? I'm flexable on this point .
Alan, There might be a little gold being thrown around at Mass Mayhem....it would be great if you can make it!

I've already got plenty of crocodile gold however, donations are always welcome!!
Should have my part done by Mass Mayhem & wpuld love to make that meet but I don't think that's in the cards. Unless, that is, I get lucky! (and that happensd more often that I've got any right to expect)
p.s. any idea why the pic isn't showing up??

It looks like you have spaces between the addy and the [IMG] parts which makes it invisible

Your right, the only problem is it didn't have spaces when I typed the tags, but when I clicked the preview button, the pic wouldn't show so I hit the add button anyway. No pic! But both times I opened it to edit it had those spaces!! Aaarrgh!!
This laptop is showing it's age & spilling a coke on the keyboard didn't help any (got it shut down & cleaned it up a best i could but now have to use an aux keyboard until I get it fixed). I been posting pix OK since that happened though, so I don't know whats wrong. Sure is a good reason to start shopping for another machine though!! (have you seen those 17" Powerbooks?}

I've been able to successfully post some other pics so I guess the problem is just somehing in the file name I assigned the pic you posted for me. Thanks for the help! Meanwhile, here's hoping we're both able to keep our keyboards dry because I want to get back to doing something I enjoy like carving!
