It's been so long since I posted about receiving a panel from Bruce Deveau (he sent it before the end of December)that many of you may have missed it. As you can surely tell from the picture, it's absolutely beautiful. What you can't tell from the photo, however, is the incredible detail and obvious time spent on it. Those of you who have seen his work know how much I will cherish this panel. Those of you who haven't finished your panels yet, get busy - a deadline's a deadline and Bruce put us ALL to shame.

Hey Sonny, between you and Bruce, is there any chance we could get a detail shot or two of Bruce's panel? I can tell it's awesome, but I wouldn't mind seeing the details a little better.
I'm glad people have enjoyed reading about my follies. heh heh

I've added some more pics. I realize that some of the panels pictured haven't made it to their recipients yet, but I haven't posted any with a recipient's name on them so it will still be a surprise when they show up.
Here are a couple pictures of a really unique panel done by Rob Carney. Rob had a friend stamp his design into a sheet of copper which was then aged and painted. Pretty neat!
People who missed out on the First one, Welcome! Beware, there is a Finish Date, albeit agentle one... If you can't stand deadlines, better gp be a politician, he!

The panels are absolutely awesome!! I wasn't able to particpate this go around as I had a major job out of town just as things got underway. But there isn't a panel there that I wouldn't proudly hang on my wall.
I want in the next time around... and I have a cool project already in mind which can be easily customized to suit any recipient. I may just start laying it out and getting the project a little ahead of schedule. Deadlines are deadlines and I don't want to be late.

I recieved my panel from Mark Fair a week ago, and I've proudly shown it to everyone who's walked in my door.
Pictures just don't do it justice! It is done in gold and silver leaf, and has some really neat small details on it that don't show up in the pics. Thanks again Mark.
And thanks to Terry for putting this together, what a great idea!
My recipient should almost have received his panel by now, I'm getting nervous!

One thing for sure, you have to see these panels in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship. I've enjoyed watching Stevo developing his concept and bringing it to life in our shop. The pictures just don't show the dimension of the carving and bevelling, the feel of the hand painted illustration the 'look' pearlescent paint, hand blending etc. I would love to see all of these panels up close and personal. Oh well glad I saw one anyway. Maybe I'll give it a go next year if the opportunity arises. Congratulations to you all on a great job especially Terry.
I just counted about 46 or 48 ( short term memory loss)different names on the pic links. That puts us at about half? I don't feel so bad, butI'm shooting for shipping out the end of the week. That way, though it is late, its only by One... - - -...month

Bumping this up with a BIG thank you to Rob Larkham for his beautiful panel. Very nice work and design. This will get a special place on the wall.

Take a look at the panel Chuck Churchill received from Scott Rowan. Scott went over and above the call of duty on this one. I think he pulled out every trick there is.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier but Russell keeps us very busy here.
I want to say Thanks to Rainbow signs for the panel they sent to me. It is great and I will enjoy having it on the wall.
Also, I don't know how many times I have finished a job and then not wanted to give it to the customer because I didn't think he would really appreciate all the effort ( well I guess if he pays the bill that's thanks enough). But this panel was truly a labour of love. I did the typeof work that I really love to do. All the work was worth it when I finally got to give it to Chuck, another great Letterhead personality. Mr. Churchill you are very welcome and again I hope you enjoy having the panel as much as I enjoyed making it.
Making it was simple. First I cut the glass to shape, scaloped the edge, drilled holes for mounting. Then acid mica etched the back ground panel, put a mask with all the elements cut in. I silvered the panel, then lead mirrored the acid etch. After that it was just peel and paint.
For the backer panel I used 3/4 inch MDF. I put on a maske with the letters and smalts sections weeded out then carved by hand (no cnc router here). I used Rust-oleum Metallic spray for the letters and black smalts in the top and bottom panels.
The cap was 1/2 inch MDF with some moldings added on. Sprayed with satin black laquer. I used a paint mask To spray the blend in the words "panel swap" then outlined in an Ivory color.
Put it all together with screws and glue Then drove over to Chuks place. Not so hard.
If you want to know about all the problems and the things I would do different That will take a lot longer.

I'm the lucky guy that received Scott's panel...hand delivered by Scott, his wife and daughter last Sunday afternoon. Right after a major snow and ice storm left a sheet of ice and 8" of white fluff all over the Toronto area.
To truely appreciate this panel you need to know that Scott works for Kelly Sign Co. in Toronto. Russell Kelly is very well known for the making signs for English style pubs. Virtually every English pub house in Ontario sports exterior and interior signs by Kelly Signs. I understand that also do a big business across the US and Canada. Scott is the glassman at Kelly. This panel (along withtwo more like it) was made after hours. Scott started it in October and I suspect worked two or three evenings every week on it.
Fron the moment I saw the panel come out of the back of his van I knew he had put a lot of thought, design and craftsmanship into it. Scott was kind enough to give me a detailed description of all the techniques he used and some of the unforseen challanges that came up along the way. For the last four days I have been trying to figure out just how he did all this. I am sure there are at least 50 major steps in its creation.
Scott neglected to mention a couple of inportant aspects of this sign. First all the decoration is done in reverse on the back surface of the glass (the carving and smaltz are on a MDF panel behind the glass). The front of the panel is smooth glass with nothing on it. Also there is a lot of goldleaf back there. The carved Ale House has a brillint gold leaf outline, the border between the silvered area and the clear area of glase is varigated leaf, the flourishres are another style of gold leaf and the other text on the glass is also gold. The gold leaf in our name has a split letter effect. The lower half of each letter has a series of transluscent gray vertical stripes under the gold leaf. The frosty mug with a head of foam has been airbrushed. It looks very realistic up close and the colours are well blended.
Every morning I open up the shop, take a look at this piece and say...WOW! was I lucky. I want to share Scott's panel with all of you. This is my invitation to each of you to pay a visit to Toronto or Niagara Falls this year. We are about 30 miles from each of them. I will gladly show off Scott's piece and have a pint of ale ready for you. Plus I can give you all the tourist advice you need. Email or call and let me know when you are coming.
For those of you that have not received a panel yet I suggest you have patience. I have learned thwt two other employees at Kelly Signs are in the Panel Swap and they are not finished yet! You may be lucky and get one with a postmarked Toronto.
I saw in Scott a man that loves his work, a passion for quality signs and a craftsman with a desire to learn more skills. He has earned the Letterhead designation.

Well....I must say that there is a BUNCH of talented people out there! I am blown away by the panels. I also realize the work and love that went into each one. What a great project.
I can just imagine the all the "eye candy" if everyone on the board got involved.
To everyone that participated...."I AM IMPRESSED"!!!
Thanks again Terry...

Shame on those that haven't made their panels- especially those that have received their panels.
Terry- how many haven't made them? How many haven't responded to any of your e-mails? Could you keep a list of the "no-shows" for future panel swap organizers?
These panels are awesome. Thanks!
