Let's assume Randy walks into my shop and asks me this question.
"Well sir, we offer a wide variety of signs with a wide price range. Perhaps you have an idea what you would like to spend and what you would like on your sign."

I give him a quick thumbnail sketch and color info, he gives me a deposit or all the money up front if it is under $100. I have no concern what anyone else would charge, I have only spent 10 minutes at the most to find out if he is "buying" or not, and I have done my best respectfully to obligate both of us.

I have been making this type of sign in a resort area of Maine for over 25 years now, I've made some for very wealthy folks whom later brought me contracts into the 10's of thousands. So thats my background, Randy, the real answer is every damn sign is different.... price accordingly.

I've gotten anywhere from $40 to $150 depending on size, involvement, volume, cheapness of the customer, how desperateley I needed the money - for a simple 1' x 2' sign $40 might be OK, I made a lot of these for several restaurants around here and they don't want to spend much - so they didn't get my best efforts. On the other hand, some of my best efforts went for peanuts on eBay.
For some good examples of Cottage Signs see Mark Fair & Mike Meyers' websites and check out this month's ish of SignCraft - Dennis Gerathy claims to make good $$$ doing them.

Do I sound arrogant when I say I've never done an average cottage sign? lol
Here in cottage country these are about 25% of my business. I do a lot of carved, high end and pictorials - but when the phone rings and someone says "how much is a sign for my camp" (that's what cottages are called here) - we say " our entry level sign is about $125.00, the most expensive we've ever done is $5000.00, but we'd love to top that for you.
Keep in mind, here on Lake of the Woods, cottages are high end. Many cottagers are American, so they are already calculating the discount they get using their dollars.
As a sideline to our traditional hand lettered and carved commercial stuff, this is fun. Cottagers love there vacation homes, love to spend money on them. The sky is the limit. They also own boats that need lettering.
We also do Dennis Garrety (sp?) style signs we call nostalgic that sell well to cottagers and to tourist camp operators for interior decor.
