I've found using Celtec 3/4 or 1" pvc board is great for putting together good looking and lasting signs- just cut to shape and apply vinyl and your done(no painting or edge sealing needed).
Anyone have experience using the material for signs hanging from scroll brackets? I have one 3x4' up hanging with standard upside-down "U" shaped sign hangers and it's done fine in all weather for a few years. -How about hanging a custom shaped sign with some flat stock wrapped partway around the sides (screwing through the flatstock into the pvc from the sides)?...any problems with expansion or otherwise? Any tips or experience at all would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm not sure I follow the "flat stock wrapped around..." description. I know I haven't done it, whatever you mean, but could you clarify?
I have used 3/4" Celtec with good results. Although painting is not required when you can buy the color you want, it does hold paint real well too. I think the edges are pourous enough that unpainted edges could become a sponge for dirt which could look bad on white, & moreso on hanging signs. Have you encountered this?

Doug, The edges on white PVC are definitely a concern. It will turn black and blotchy with mildew and dirt pretty quick. For anything that is going to be up more than temporarily, we try to paint or at least prime the edges. There is a market for the first person who comes up with a product or tool to seal/fuse those edges shut easily - a real aggrivation on complex pieces like individual cut out letters.
Alan, I don't anticpiate a problem with banding a PVC panel with iron. I havn't really done it, but I would if the need arose. I expect it would be more of a decorative treatment than a structural need - so maybe an expansion gap could be incorporated into the band if you're concerned about it.

Celtec, Kometex, Sintra, PVC will not hold up in exterior applications with out a top coat of paint, latex or enamel.
The light will fade it, cause pot holes in it and screw it up pretty good!
We have had good success with exterior aplications after coating. The local Sign-a-dign-dongs placed some PVC signs outdoors that have faded, warped and gone to hell. Didn't take long either.
I hope your sign is on a North facing wall!
