I have to do an outdoor mural of two different faux doors. The building surface is sort of a grainy concrete - not stucco, but not smooth either. I'm working from photos of doors that are stained wood with frosted windows that sort of look like stained glass.
Because of the grainy surface, I would guess that one of those faux graining tools won't work to get the wood grain look of the doors. I will be using One-shot enamels. What colors do I use and how do I mix the paints to brush on a faux wood grain effect (mahogany)? I'm assuming the paint will be mixed with a clear of some sort. I experimented with some brown and maroon mixed in clear but it looks like a mess.
I'm also concerned about how to achieve the effect of shadow and light on a rectangular inset area in the doors.

pete sounds like you need to have an old walldog give you some hands on help. sometimes its the best thing to do.......this sounds like a job that will have to be done "at the wall" with mixing colors to get proper shades of shadows. not much instruction caqn be done on here....anyone close to you thats done this kinda painting?
