Quite a few years ago, I worked for a shop that had just moved into a larger building. With more than double the square footage of the old location, it seemed to be a breath of fresh air, and everyone had lots more "elbow room" to do their work. This new shop was located right near a mainline of the Canadian National railway, and they had freight trains running by quite often during the day. Coincidentally, the shop pattern guy, Bill, had just gotten his very first pair of eyeglasses, and he'd chosen to go with bifocals.

With the new shop, Bill had a nice unobstructed space to project the patterns, using an overhead projector. It wasn't too far into the first day that Bill began to complain about his new glasses. It seemed that he'd just get the projector focused and positioned and start laying out the pattern when his eyes would "go squirrelly" as he put it. "It's just like when the horizontal hold on the TV starts to act up" he complained. "The image of the patterns start bouncing up and down, and I can't seem to follow the image at all". He went back to the Optometrist to get re-tested, but the optometrist told him that he'd gotten the right prescription, and that there was nothing wrong with his glasses. About then, Bill started to think he was coming down with some other ailment like palsy or Parkinson's desease.

Then, one of the other guys noticed that Bill only complained about his "bouncing bifocals" whenever a freight train was going by. It turned out that the overhead projector was picking up the vibrations, magnifying the movement onto the projected image, and convincing Bill that his eyeglasses were the cause of his misery. Eventually, the problem was solved by having the projector sit on a thick foam base with a supporting platform on top to absorb the vibrations. It wasn't perfect, but Bill was able to return to normal, and the patterns again got made. [Smile]

Why do I get all those on-line offers to sell me Viagara, when the only thing hardening is my arteries ?
