So many of us have wondered what Rick would do when Lola went home, and now she has to deal with his passing. There are no words to express the loss right now.

This is a huge loss in the signage community, my thoughts to all who loved him, I only wish I knew him more personally, instead of from a distance. The loss of knowledge in one single day from the passing of an individual like Rick, makes it all the more important to keep the craft alive and share and grow together. His contribution will never be forgotten, what a life, we can only hope to accomplish a small portion of what he has done.
With love and deep respect. Rick Chavez

So sorry to hear this news. I was shocked because so many of the elder's who have been mentioned on similar threads were just names to my relatively new involvement with the letterheads. Ricks name was just so much more familiar to me from so many references to him, Esoteric sign supply, & the infamous Conclave meets, that I felt sure to follow my new interest in gold leaf to doing business with Rick, & even if never invited to a meet, I felt any trip to California would have been an excuse to see Ricks shop.

Man I'm so freeking sad by this, one of my worst days has arrived, I always admired Rick for his knowledge and his ability to share, He and his knowledge was so cherrished by me that I feered when this day arrived.
we have lost so much,
But putting aside selfish feelings, I pray to God that he comfort and keep Lola strong through this, as well as freinds and family members. And if they have a letterhead meet everytime a letterhead dies then man those streets paved with gold will be looking the best they can

Boy, is God going to find out everything there is to know about Gold Leaf!! Those pearly gates must have been looking a little faded for them to call up the expert.
I never spent less than an hour on the phone with Rick whenever I would call him. Never did I think I would lose the chance to speak with him any time I wanted. We really lost a treasure in this industry. For those who didn't know of Rick, go start digging to find out more about a true craftsman. He was the epitome of the Letterhead movement - and you need to know why.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rick and Lola quite a few years ago, and even though I live quite a few thousand kilometers away we formed a good relationship. Occasionaly we would meet at various Letterhead Meets and just sit down and compare notes. I will indeed miss him, my heartfelt sympathies go out to Lola and his family.
On behalf of all the Australian Letterheads I would like to convey our sincerest condolences and sympathies to a great tradesman and friend, he will be sadly missed

I've spoke with Rick a few times and each time I have learned so much from him. Even having never met him, I know we as a craft have lost a great deal today.
The first time I called him, I was wanting to try the crackle effect and couldn't find what I needed. I was referred to Esotric and gave Rick a call. After talking me through everything for probably 1/2 hour, he says "I'll put an instruction sheet in the box and if you have any problems or questions, you have my number". I hung up from that call with so much knowledge, confidence and appreciation. The more I type this, the more I ask myself "how much have we lost?"
I've always considered Esoteric one of those places I wanted to loose a couple days at if I ever get that direction. Just to pick Rick's brain and wander around checking out all the neat stuff. Just yesterday, I was talking about trying some smalting and had planned on calling Rick today, but got caught up and didn't get the chance. Now, I will never get that chance.
We have lost so much today and we will feel the ripple effect for years to come.
My heart goes out to his family and those who had the privelege of knowing him.

A deep sadness has entered my heart as Ron Percell called me with this grim news. Both Rick and Lola have helped me so much over the past few years. Every time I went to the Conclave Rick would always find time to help me with a project or a technique. Rick will always be remembered in this family and heaven has gained one heck of a guy. Musta been those habaneros? Rick was a fine friend and embraced his faith with Jesus as his Lord. He'll be in a place that he longed to go to, perhaps not this soon though. My tears now are for Lola, who is as decent and caring a human as I've ever met. Many lives have been enriched by Rick, some with sign knowledge, some with more. His contribution to our craft is enormous! I sure wish I had an autographed copy of his book, but he has not written it yet. How many of you have ever held the manuscript of the Gospel of Matthew that he penned with such brilliant illumination and glistening gold on each page of the parchment? That was his first lettering job I believe. Farewell Frederick Glawson.

I've heard so much about Rick in the past years and all of it has been good. He was a true "Master". I took it for granted that he would be around for a long time. I would have loved to meet him and seen his work in person. I hope that his life will be an inspiration to the rest of us to continue the Letterhead spirit by sharing our knowledge and working hard to produce beautiful work.

Today has been a hard one for me... such sad news. But it is also a day of celebration for the life of Rick Glawson.
Rick kindly invited me to attend a Conclave last year, through another friend Rick Sacks. Or perhaps it was the other way around. I couldn't attend this year and was truely disapointed when my invitation arrived. But I was looking forward to next year.......
I went to last year's meet with great anticipation... but when I arrived there I was so much out of my element. I mean I was with the masters of gold and the techniques they had spent many years perfecting. In this field I am a rank amature. A quick peek in the window made me realize how much I had to learn.
But I was welcomed there with open arms. Rick & Lola kindly answered my many questions. Rick, although busy with a hundred other folks took the time to look over my shoulder from time to time as I worked on my little gold project. He gently gave me some hints and suggestions, and quietly observed my unusual way of doing things.
I got to chat with him a bit through the meet, and had the pleasure of sitting beside Lola at a leasurely dinner at that fabulous sushi bar that was one of Rick's favorites. She is such a delight! She bent my ear at length with many tales of her life and involvement with Rick. She told me of how her & her husband had taken him in. The few words spoken on that subject gave me a glimpse of how much that event had changed his life.
And while there I saw the manuscript of which Rick Sacks speaks. Instantly, I understood so much more of this kind, gentle man.
I admired his huge passion for his work and those he shared his life with.
He lived what he believed and enjoyed his days here. He provided a wonderful example to all he met. Especially me.
