Apart from the obvious association with the wheel, why is it that so many car manufacturer logos it seems are either circular or oval?
BMW
Lexus
GM Holden
Ford
Toyota
Nissan
Daewoo
Hyundai
VW
Audi
Mercedes Benz
Mazda
Eunos
Chrysler (give or take)
Kia
Subaru
Tata
Opel
Land Rover/Range Rover
Saab

The only exceptions I can find are:
Volvo (sorry OP but they will always be boxy, even the logo)
Ferrari
Porsche
Honda - still kinda round-ish
GM (US)

Maybe I need to stop looking at other peoples designs.
So anyway why is it so, has the design world been sucked so dry that even the best credentialed designers can't break the mould?
Enquiring minds want to know.
David

My guess is that it is easier to incorporate into the car as this shape... like into the grill and onto the hubcaps etc.

When I did the little emblem on the funky truck at Giggle Ridge... yup you guessed it I did it as an oval.

I guess I'm one of those designers "sucked so dry that I can't break the mold" [Smile]

Hmmm... maybe their vehicle designers didn't want to be bothered with the "grunt work" so they had no choice but to turn to "graphic designers"? [Smile]

Round logos are easier to incorporate into a vehicle design, although I am sure the people that came up with the logos would have a much more intrinsic explanation to make themselves feel important. [Smile]

At any rate, all vehicle manufacturer logos have one thing in common - simple, basic design.

The BMW logo represents an airplane prop turning. Airplane engines were once their primary product.

I think it must be that they look more aerodynamic
"sleek" or otherwise less constrained.
Kinda makes them look FASTER with less fuel consuption.
