are out there? It seems a lot of "creative" types, like some signpainters, graphic designers, artists in general... seem to be bent toward making music of some form or another.Just wonderin' who else is out there.
I started playing drums at age 9, played in the typical garage bands thru the teens. Traveled with a couple of groups in my early 20's. Kinda found a niche the past several years in church worship bands, have several paying gigs a month, get hired to record drum tracks a couple of times a year, and just started another band the end of last year and we are just starting to work on our first recording project that should be out by the end of spring. All of this keeps me busy, but it's still more like a "hobby" than "work". I am working on our band website, hoping to have it ready to browse soon. I'll keep you posted.

Another musicain here. Happens to be that I am another drummer too. Still play, but just a hobby. Played plenty of paid gigs in my time, but never any real serious bands, & still no real good recordings either, for me, yet. I don't take myself or my music too seriously, but accumulated a bit of talent over the years, so I don't rule out a time in the future, when maybe I am less devoted to the amount of extra hours I put into my sign business, that I may make that hobby move a little further off the back burner & more into my life.

Also another drummer here ( seems like alot of us here play drums)... been playing since I was 15, mostly in Christian worship bands and such. I have played some tracks for local small time artists. I play every weekend in my church band now. I play drumset but have gotten into hand percussion the last couple of years. I really like the handmade percussion instruments. I have a drum called an Ashiko that was made in Eureka Springs, AR with a goatskin head and solid burch shell. It's a beatiful piece of work and sounds killer, too! Maybe I'll drag it to a live meet some day.

Okay-I'll be different-I play the piano. Some classical and lots of Eagles, Seger, Journey, etc. I didn't take lessons until I was 24 so have been playing about 11 years. Have my grade 3 Royal Conservatory. Working on grade 4. I thoroughly enjoy playing the piano and had to beg for lessons as a kid and never got them. My mother hated piano so bad that when she was about five years old she drank a whole bottle of Castoria (laxative) so she wouldn't have to go to her lesson. Nonetheless, I think she should be paying for my lessons!!!

I play bass guitar a little. Mostly just jam some with "the boys" here at my home....my son and his friends have a band called Nishnabotna, and the upstairs big bedroom has become a band studio. We have a drum set, amps, guitars, p.a. system & mixer, speakers, etc. I'm always running to the music store for drum skins and sticks, guitar strings, picks and whatever else they need. I probably support their habit more than I actually get to play. But it's great having a live band right one's own home! To me anyway. Not so with some of their parents who think they need to be "realistic". It's a talent that truly moves me as much as visual art does. Music is good for the soul. We like Nirvana, Silverchair, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Collective Soul, to name a few.

Keyboard player here. I have an ensoniq sq-1 and looking for a hammond xb-2 pretty soon. Played with the same guys for over twenty years in bars and clubs and festivals and any other place. I sing also. We had some good three part harmony going. Did alot of old stuff from the fifties all the way up, including chicago, ides of march, seger, eagles, skynrd, you name it. Also did the country thing. Our lead guitar player, Bo Allen, signed a contract with Dreamworks this past wednesday. You'll be hearing his stuff pretty soon. Great writer and singer. Apparently he'll be teamed up with a female singer named Shelley Rann. I still play alot at home, but no more clubs. SOme festivals during the summer, but thats about it. Always wanted a career in music, but never made the step. Went the way of the sign business. I miss it sometimes, but my wife dont.

Blues Harmonica. It's got a great gritty, soul sound, and I can practice in the truck when driving. (One handed on the road, two at lights) No, It,s not as distracting as a cell phone. I've always been the guy that's got "too many irons in the fire" (including blacksmithing, HA!) If I couldn't do it in the truck, I wouldn't do it much at all. Someday I'll get around to showing some of the ornamental iron work. Excuse me while I go to feed the hogs. Jim.

I started out playing drums in 3rd grade, from there played clairinet in the concert band in high school, tenor and baritone sax in jazz band and quin-toms (5 piecedrum set on a shoulder harness) in marching band.
My weapon of choice is my Peavy T-60 through a Mesa Boogie. Since I was 14 I've played in bands and set in on gigs and jams every chance I get. Here is the rest of my member photo.

I've played bass in a couple garage bands. However, I've just recently started to take bagpipe lessons from a guy here on the coast. His primary gigs include Irish pubs and police and firefighters funerals. I don't see a big future in my musical career

Been at it about 28 years with no signs of quittin'........played full-time for about 10 of those years. I come from a family of musicians......here and Europe. Spent a year in Europe during the mid-90's touring with the Kelly Family( my cousins) sharing the stage with such artists as Aerosmith, ZZ Top, the Hooters and Peter Gabriel......but today I'm playing with some of my best friends, the same guys that I played my first gig with 27 years ago.......and havin' a BLAST!!!!
Oh yeah......my nephew, Matt Kelly, is touring the World with his band, Irish punkers "Dropkick Murphys". I'll be at all 3 shows when they come back home to Boston for St. Paddy's Day.....can't wait!

Hey, wouldn't it be great if some musicians find each other in a thread like this. Spud, so far, you are the closest to me. Not close enough to get together for casual jams, but, there's always Mass Mayhem coming up May 9 (which also happens to be my birthday). Are you up to a reunion gig like we did last year?

Seriously, if anyone is coming to Mass Mayhem, I will be bringing a PA, an acoustic/electric, a mic or two, and maybe even a Strat and Amp. Any bass players or other musicians are more than welcome to sit in or step up for a solo number. Consider it an open mic. I'm only good for about a half hour of caterwallin', after that it's anybody's show.

I've been trying to practice my guitar more, since I bought my 10 year old a student model. It helps me spend more time with him. But my 15 year old is the musician. He was playing Bruback's "Take 5" on the alto sax yesterday and it was sounding real good. He played it last Thursday for the Jazz Band tryout at his school. He didn't think it worked well, but even after he was still practicing. He shares my love of Van Morrison music, Coltrane. The remainer of his taste in music is excellent.

Man I havent played an actual instrument in a long time, but through my life (which is still short-lived as Im only 26) I have played violin, cello, recorder (woodwind), piano, electronic keyboard, acoustic guitar and also did the vocals role.
Then I got into MIDI and used Alesis Synths coupled with computers to lay down tracks in virtually any instrument voice known to man plus a number of my own creations.
Nowadays I don't do anything regarding producing music, but I do setup concert and theater sound systems (or as close as you can get to it) in homes and cars - especially in cars, an extreme hobby of mine.

Gee, I wonder if there are any musician bull boards out there right now, where someone just posted "anyone else on here paint signs?". Just more of my stupid humor, I'm sorry. I did play trumpet and baritone all the way through school, and quite well I might add. At 21 I sold my trumpet and bought a guitar. I was getting......wellllll.......Ok at it until '87 when my left index finger got in a fight with a circular saw (don't ask, long story ) and the saw won. I still have my finger, but even after 4500 bucks worth of microsurgery, it just doesn't like my guitar . Bummer. I really was enjoying playin'.

I've always thought it was really cool that so many artists are also musicians. I play a lot of instruments, write songs, and have just released my 5th cd. At present I'm building a new home studio - just bought a macG4 and digital performer. I use a moto828 as an interface and have a barrage of instruments and equipment. I hope to record my next project myself... in my own studio. Do any of you have MP3's? Nancy

Hey Nancy... Have you heard about the Songpainter CD we made a while back? Links to some short clips from it are in my signature. There has been some interest in doing a Songpainter II.

My husband didnt respond to this post, he must have missed it so I will reply on his behalf
He is also a musician, he played overseas for eight years. He was lead guitarist for a swedish band called Bryggeripojkarna. They played alot of cruises to Germany, Norway but mostly played around Sweden. David also worked for a company designing websites before he got into the sign business. I definately agree with the artist/musician thing going on. He still does all three, designs sites and signs and plays guitar.

Hi everyone, I'm a full time sign artist and a part time musician. I've played guitar for about 30 years, but I play drums in a band. We play weekly at the Union Hotel Saloon in Occidental CA. Mostly roots rock covers.

lots of musical talent here in Letterville!
We are way ahead of you....last year we used this BB to find original music by sign people and asked they rework their songs to have theme related to the sign industry in some way or form.
The result was SONGPAINTER, Sign Music by Sign People.
Go to the front page of letterhead.com and click on the SONGPAINTER icon. Or go up a few posts to Joe Rees post, he has the ordering information on his web site. Down load the form, and send it off.
great music!
