I've searched high and low and wasted many hours online, I hope someone here can help me.
I want a signpainter's kit. I like the old style wood ones, with the fold out thing. I'm not real thrilled with the aluminium ones that everyone has and I don't trust the plastic tool boxes seeing as I broke one last week. The metal Sears style tool boxes are kinda heavy empty let alone with all my schtuff in it. The wood boxes like Wal-mart have have too many little drawers and no place for anything but brushes and small things.
I Really want a wood one. I've seen pictures of what I want on the sign museum website and I think Timi had one at Pat's meet. DO they still make these to buy somewhere? If not, does someone have plans for one or know where I could get the plans? I thought of designing and building my own but if I do that, it will have to be absolutley perfect before I start construction and at this time next year I'll still be trying to decide what perfect is. I know I'm being real picky but I figure this is like a house, I'm gonna have this for a very long time.
I'm pulling my hair out, any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Hiya Kissy, Try Dick Blick or another option is to look for fishing tackle boxes. I'm sure others will come up with better recomendations though.

The only thing I can find in the Dick Blick catalog that comes remotely close is the aluminium box I don't want. I'll try tackle boxes. Do they make those in wood?

these boxes are for life - they don't make a specific signie's box anymore but there are ones that could definitely be adapted (e.g. http://www.gerstnerusa.com/make-up/w308a.htm )
don't faint when you check out the prices!

Chris the box of mine that you saw at Pat King's meet is a 1927 H.Gerstner & Sons machinist case. They are no longer in production but they are made in such a manner that they will last a lifetime. They used to make signkits but due to lack of sales they are no longer in production, The links Karen T made are about the best quality toolkits money can buy if you prefer to spend that sort of money, you'll surely get what you pay for,as these folks have the kind of product you'll want to restore after you have used it for a couple of decades.

I snagged these pics from around here some time ago. Maybe someone here can remind me who's kit it is or who made it. I thought it was pretty amazing and would like to make something similar some day.

Chris, The one Terry made that I was lucky enough to win in England is a work of art. You may have seen it at Pat's meet. The one he made for Kookaburra was smaller, but also functional as well as beautiful. I'm sure if you made one yourself, it would be a lifetime keepsake, especially after collecting some Letterhead pals' autographs on it.

Not sure what your budget or time frame is, but I encourage you to contact Rob Larkham up in Western Mass (413-354-0287). He may be able to put you in touch with two individuals that may be able to help you out. The first individual is the one that made Brian “Spider” Papa’s kit that is pictured above in Terry’s post. The other individual is the source of the Pro Palettes Rob offers. No promises, but am willing to bet it’s worth a phone call. If you do call, tell him “print for profit” told you to call; Rob’s a good guy in spite of some things that happened here.

Terry, I hadn't thought of Rob. I met him at Mars and fell in love with the pro pallet. I think Rob is one of the reasons I'm so gung-ho about Mass mayhem.
