had a meeting today with a woman building a fitness centre. the building is steel beams, an industrial building. the roof is beams with tyvek covered insulation bulging inbetween. can this be painted?

i thought it would either absorb too much paint or paint may not stick to it....

come on gang, pull those brillliant experiences out for me to enjoy.....

Hi Gail. I used to letter tyvek banners with 1-shot poster colours. When you do this, the material has a tendancy to wrinkle and bubble. I found that by using tyvek screen ink thinner to the colour, that this wrinkling and bubbling was minimized, and the material flattened out when dry. I never tried using the actual silk screen ink thinned down, but you probably could do so. The ink used to be made by Naz Dar but I believe that Ink Dezyne is now the manufacturer here in Canada. Since this ink was made especially to be compatable with screen printing onto tyvek, it should do the trick for painting on the material in question.

One possible drawback is that this will stink when drying, and the insulation behind may absorb some of this odor. If so, the occupants may be smelling the aroma for quite some time, and it's possible that they will never completely get rid of the smell.
I'd inform the customer of this possibility, and get them to sign a waiver absolving you of any responsibility for odors resulting from or emanating from the insulation, after the painting is completed. This may be very important, especially if the customer is renting or leasing the premises that they're in.

If they sell Tyvec for inexpensive banners, why can't you paint on the building wrap size? It is usually painted with latex paints.

ken, i swear you've tried just about everything

this seems like a pretty industrial type job (hee, hee) and I think i lean more toward a decorative painter (murals, but, not stadium size tyvek ), but, i think i owe it a wee bit of research, just to see. i always want to know the answer when i'm posed a question

thanks....more, more, more.....
