I had a friend of my son come to the house 2 weeks ago.He asked me if I could repaint a welding mask he had bought from the USA.paid $200.00 and it came painted .this mask was a skelton head with flames on the sides. The flames were god ugly(looked like lobster claws.I told him I had never air brushed like this before and I would try it.I looked at it for a week and thought of what to do-I was scaired. Finally I thought I couldn't do any worse so here it go's.Finished the mask yesterday and called the owner. He absolutely loved the paint job!!Whey better then he expected he said.SO today I am proud!!!Could be a second start in a niche I never thought of.

Very Cool! Don'tcha love it when it works that way? Makes you wonder why it took so long to try it. That's one of the nice things about this business, there is ALWAYS something you haven't done yet.

How many styles/techniques are lurking out there that we "don't think we can do, leary of, etc." You got it right when you thought "hey, I can at least do it better than it is now"
I know I got a list of "scared ofs" lol

I know how that goes...there's a handful of things that I kept convincing myself that I couldn't cook well but I'm getting over my fears. You just have to DO IT!

I was exhibiting cold glass painting at a craft fair once and was commissioned to paint a small suncatcher, depicting a skull. The lady in question wanted it as a present for her son (no flames but some blood please). Apparently he collected skulls. Well, that’s all right – everyone’s gotta have a hobby! I put off starting it for ages – thought I knew what a skull looked like until it came to painting one, then I found out just how superficial my knowledge was. However, once I’d done a bit of research and finally started, I really enjoyed the job. The customer was very pleased with it, but whether it passed muster with her son, the expert, I never heard.

Looking back through the years, all of those "scared ofs" turned out to be some of my best work.
And yes a motorcycle helmet was one of those on that list. Hand striped scroll work that was mirror imaged on both sides working on rounded surfaces. Just trying to hold onto the helmet in a comfortable posiition was the biggest britch.

Cool, Randy, it's a multi purpose mask: it can also be worn on Halloween....lol Just out of curiosity, will that paint not be damaged by the sparks that fly during welding? Did you use automotive paints?

Judgin by how my welding helmet gets treated/handled, the sparks wont cause as much damage as dropping it, kicking it, stepping on it, or tossing it onto the worktable.
I've seen that helmet before somewhere
