I have the picture of Jeff's panel uploaded now. I like it!!
Fianlly got mine finished as well and will try to get it shipped today or tomorrow. I don't have the recipient's name on it, so here's a picture!
It's the first time I've tried carving slate. Didn't turn out too bad, I guess. Slate's a funny thing to carve. I started carving from the right hand side and went left (not sure why, just did) When I got to just passed the middle, it got REALLY hard to carve! The hardest being the very last letter, the "L" which is why it's a little fatter than the rest, it was really, really hard. Almost like carving through a knot in wood.
Hope my recipient likes it!

Thanks Bob and Shirley. The slate is just an 8" floor tile. I went into a flooring store that advertised slate and asked what they had and she just gave me a couple different samples. Good deal.
Bob, here is a picture of my fancy carving tool.
It's just an Olfa knife that I wrapped some tape around for comfort. I used the same blade for the whole thing. I have a book called "Letters Slate Carved". Traditionally a stone chisel and mallet are used. If I had a proper easel that I could fasten the piece to, I would have done that. When I hit the hard spot, I used a cheap carpenter's chisel and a mallet and that worked good.

Terry, NICE PANEL - Looks like maybe some Rob Cooper influence. There's a great article on his recent work in Thailand in the Jan-Feb Signcraft. I'm assuming that the lettering is 23K Gold Leaf - anything unusual about applying to slate? I really want to try that - it's killer.

Very nice panel! I've done some slate carving, but I never did that nice of a job with slate floor tiles. I had trouble with them being just too flaky. Terry did a great job! Anyone looking for slate should also call your local amusement service (the guys that fix arcade games and pool tables). You can get lots of pool table slate for next to nothing. Most of them have a stack of broken tops piling up behind the shop. Very smooth and about an inch thick.

Sonny- I'm glad somebody picked up on the Rob Cooper influence. I've always admired his work. It was after one of his articles that I went out and got the tiles. Haven't tried it till now. In fact, other than a practice letter on the back of the tile used in my panel, this was my first attempt!
As far as gilding goes, I painted the letters in first with One Shot then sized and gold leafed. It turned out to be the best gild I've done yet. The painted slate was very smooth and gave a nice shine to the gold.
