I'm about to bid on a job involving lettering some existing awnings for a rent-to-own business. I plan on masking it and brushing on the ink. The awnings will remain up during the work. I'm guessing several words, but don't know the sizes yet.
Never done this before, but hay, what the heck.
All responses greatly appriciated.

I don't know if this will help you any, I've never done them myself but some friends of mine have - the method of preference seems to be: staple a board onto the back side of where the lettering will go. The staples will pull out when you're done and not leave any trace. Use Block Out, if it's to be white, and letter with a fitch. If it's in color go over the Block Out. If you're going over existing lettering I can't imagine how you might mask - by the time awnings need to be redone they are usually wrinkled and crusty from years of moving around in the elements. Good luck.

Hi Dave,

As for pricing....

Try to Deterime your actual labor hours times what you would pay a union worker ( $18 per hour for example)

Add in your material costs.

Add in your time for "selling" the job

Add in 10% for screw ups

Add markup of 20 to 40% for profit

Add interest up front if you know the customer is a "slow payer"

You will probably arrive at a figure that is an "educated guess."

If you get the bid, keep records to see if you came out close to your guesstimate. If you lose a few hours, you just lose some time watching TV, (or some form of recreation time)

If you don't get the job, ask the customer how much less the job went for. Then try to determine if that guy made any money or not.

Sometimes it is a blessing to lose a job!
