Hiya Heads, I'm going to be working from home(after hours) and painting small HDU signs for friends & family. I figure if I start now I'll have them ready as Christmas presents for this upcoming holiday season. Although I would like to stick with 1 Shot, I just don't want to risk having the v.o.c.s around in my basement. So, I'm looking for recommendations for latex primers and paints. Also, what brand and sizes of brushes would be good for starters since I haven't purchased a brush in at least 5 years. Any other input would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Checkers

Remember, natural bristles/hairs will probably get REAL floppy/droopy while working in water based paint. Experiment with synthetics or stiffer bristles.

Checkers,(may I call you Checkers lol) let me rant on ONCE AGAIN about the Great Brushes .... John Hannukaine series by Mack. Green handle, silver round ferrule. ...quoted from the Canadian Signcrafters catalogue, p.81:
The Hannukaine Quill: *Nice Edge *Lotsa Snap *Longer Life *Oil & Water Media *Priced Right *100% Fat Free
Available in 6 sizes: xxs Similar to a size #1 graduated quill xs " #2 " s " #4 " m " #6 " l " #8 " xl " #10 "
Buy the Full Set & save $$$
I've used them for lettering on painted cement block with 1 shot, with latex on plywood and walls, they don't "splay" out when going around curves. Tracks like it's on a rail.
The Nocturna Series are flats, a much softer hair, I've used them in latex, acrylic vinil(Deka)with good results, where a flat is needed.
**See the Portfolio page of some of my stuff, the menu board, 1 shot on varnished panel, used 3 sizes of these brushes, smallest lettering is 5/16" They are like paint writing sticks. I like'em, you will too. I have a set for oil, set for latex, and last week ordered 2 more sets....just because!!
btw, I get no $$$ for this rant. You can try Mack Brushes direct, also Canadian Signcrafters... 1-800-663-9753
That's all I have to say about that...

I use the white haired synthetic brushes with the green handles that you can get in art supply stores.I have three or four from about 1`/4 in to 3/8 inch. Paintwise, I have been priming with Coastal WB88, then 2 coats of Benjamin Moore flat latex, followed by one or two coats of 1-shot on the letters. You might prefer a semi- gloss, or even gloss for the backgrounds, but I've been using the flat....I just plain like the way it looks. By the way, I have a plastic Rubbermaid toolbox that I keep water in, and I keep all my water=based brushes in there. They never dry out, and the lid, when snapped down, keeps the water from evaporating, or sloshing around in the truck. Theres nothing in that toolbox but brushes and water.

Hey Checkers, I've been thinking, how can you be a bonehead painter without some oil based pans of caint (whatever) lying around? It's all in the mindset. When my wife commmented on the appearance of the chest freezer on the porch, I told her Honey, I'll paint a sign on it. Then it will look great. Remember, SIGNS LOOK GOOD. You've got to have this at the core of your thinking: SIGNS LOOK GOOD. Now I got to git 'er lernt about paint smells. Sincerly, Jim. P.S. Try to figure out how much of this is joking and how much isn't.

Thanks for the input guys. I really don't want to experiment with different brushes because I'm starting out in the hole on this one and going down hill from there. Remember, these are just for friends, family and therapy - not for profit. But, I want to do them right the first time. I went the way of the art store, but, trying to get answers out of these people was worse than pulling teeth! James, to be honest, I like the smell of 1 Shot in the morning. It's smells like work is getting done. The problem really isn't the paint. It's the thinners & other flammable products associated with the 1 shot. They don't mix well with the furnace. And John, you know the old saying, "...just don't call me late for dinner". Anyone else want to add their 2 cents? I'm hoping to make the purchase sometime next week.
Cheers,
Checkers
