you can also do the same thing by using PhotoShop. there's a utility in the newer versions (i think since version 5), that automates the creation of web pages. you just tell it how many pictures on a page.
in your case, 1 row with 4 "columns" (four pictures) and select the pictures, and Photoshop automatically scales them to thumbnails from the larger photos, and then puts it all into code, with links to the larger photo. when the page is posted, you have four thumbnails all lined up, and clicking on them opens a fresh page with the full size image.
pretty neat. it can do multiple pages that way.
