Hi Karyn, you will get various opinions here, everyone has their favorites. After many years of working with gold, my favorite is German gold, 23kt glass gold, loose. After using others, I found it much easier to work with. As far as size, the same thing, tried others and found LeFranc to be the best. Especially the slow size when doing carved signs. Suppliers are Sepp Leaf, Barclay and Art Essentials.Good luck.

Karyn, the gold changes not only from manufacturers but seasonally. Who had the best last year might not still be on top. If you called the sales folks they can tell you the current hot seller. If you buy it from a regular sign supply house it's probably priced high and old stock. If you called Esoteric you'd get the scoop from folks that use the gold they sell and are regularly trying different golds. They know which gold is better for what.

Hello Karyn, I strongly suggest the Smith/LeBlanc book "Gold Leaf Techniques." I've been gilding for 25 years and still keep a copy for reference. I've had good luck with Art Essentials of New York and I like their German Slow size over LaFranc.
