Nice job Ryan!

Less detail = much more outstanding to the eye. I like the star detail between the numbers. Very patriotic look too.

Ryan, the rule of thumb is the lettering/numbers should have the most contrast, the outlines/shades are part of the background, basic stuff but it works. I wrote an article on this that appeared in Stock Car Racing Magazine a few years back. Unfortunately it's on another computer and I can't access it. If you like I'll photo copy the article and mail it to you. E-mail me if you are interested.
One tip I can give you when choosing a color for numbers and lettering on a race car or sign, truck door what have you, is to pick a color that will work on it's own without an outline, then try to choose an outline color that will enhance the readability. In the case of your modified here, you have a white number on a white race car. Try the dark blue for the number, thin down the red outline and go with a pastel blue for the shadow, leave the star as it is.

Ryan,

First of all I want to thank you for having the guts to post a pic for everyone to examine. The responses you received on your first post where a great learning experience for me as well. I do not letter racecars, so you can take my advice with a grain of salt, but here is what I read in the first post:

-Your numbers were too close together
-You do not need a black outline, in fact it hinders readability at great speeds
-You do not need tricks in the numbers, as they will not show up on the track
-The customer wanted flames and checkers

To me it seems you have taken the same design and substituted different clipart and changed the colors. I know the customer is not always right, but it seems if they ask for flames, you should try to accomidate them. My gut feeling on the first design, is that you should have the flames get larger toward the back of the car,(stretch them upward) to make them stand out more, play with rotating the 1 like Donna suggested, drop the black outline like George suggested, and get the checkered flag out of the lettering (sorry forgot who suggested that).

You received some very valuable constructive criticism from folks who know what they are talking about. I would pay attention and learn from them.

Again, thanks for sharing your learning experience with the rest of us.

Suelynn
