I think that's what they're called. Out of no where another web site pops up. Just like I am typing this question another pop up appears...this one was from a website, if I want to refinance? Is there a way to get rid of these from happening? It really gets annoying even more since I am a two finger typer, I have to keep looking at the keyboard to type, then boom! another pop up so what I was typing didn't even get typed. Does this happen to any of you?
Someone told me I had to format my harddrive, because it has been acting wierd, since I can't scan the disk or defrag anymore. I've been backing up of all my files on a CD just in case this sucker does do a major crash. Any suggestions out there?

Do a search on here for popups. I recall Amy had written a post about it before and she said there are programs you can download to prevent them. Some are even free.

Hey Cisco! If I hear you correctly you are seeing pop ups while visiting Letterheads? One thing for sure, they are not coming from this site, so it is coming from something resident on your computer.

Depending on the version of Windows you have, you should be able to Control/Alt/Delete once and see a list of everyting that is running on your computer. You can turn off everything that is not required to keep the computer running - systray and a couple of others, don't recall offhand. If you turn off the wrong thing it may crash your computer but it will restart without problems. IE have no fear.

Also find the startup directory and see what is in there. In fact, turn off everything that is there unless it is something you recognize and want to start automatically when your computer is turned on.

My guess is, you have picked up some spyware. You can go to adaware.com and get their program it will erase spyware for you.

In a related theme, you may have cookies set by the bad guys. Your machine will still run if you erase ALL the cookies, but then the next time you come here you will have to log in again to reset your letterhead cookie. Most of that stuff in your cookie folder is extraneous, so housekeep it aggressively. You can tell which ones are letterheads. All the ones you don't recognize, blow them away.

This won't solve the pop up problem at other websites, but if your machine is clean you should never see a pop up here. Vic G

Here's what gets me, Francisco; You visit a website, then start getting pop ups, so you know they came from that site, and then the pop-ups increase in frequency until you feel like they have taken over your computer, then suddenly, in the midst of this frenzy, you get an ad that reads "Want to stop all those annoying pop-ups/"
Talk about down and dirty selling techniques! Bombard someone with something, and then offer them a way to stop it.

I hate all that ...........crap [Mad]

To avoid pop-ups in Internet Explorer, go to Tools-Internet Options-Security-Custom Level.

Disable stored cookies, active-x controls, active scripting and scripting java applets, and OK your way back out.

This is unfortunate, because some of those features are intrinsically good. But as with commercial TV, the junk hustlers took over, and it's ruined. Competent webmasters should bear this in mind and go back to the KISS method: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

go get Adaware . a free proggy that searches yer machine and removes spy ware and certain cookies.. These cookies are used to operate many popups.

then go get Zone alarm pro. (free) it has a setting that shuts off more popups..

Just one visit to a site that uses cookies will set you up for a big problem

i just tuned up a machine that had almost 300 popups cookies that weere all draggin down his machien to a crawl..

well I tried Bruce Williams method, which by the way ended all the pop ups, except for when I came to the Letterhead site, I only got one pop up, anybody need any coupons? But the down side of it was I couldn't log on here, I tried quite a few times till I thought maybe I should reset the security thing back to what it was. I was able to log on.
I guess I'll try one of these web site for downloads for the spys. just when you think everything is going smooth, ah well...

My over-do, FranCisco. Stored cookies has to be enabled to log on here. I do that only for Letterville and a very few other sites. It's a little inconvenient to switch between enable-disable, but it seems to stop spam. By disabling the other do-dads, I never have pop-ups.

This kind of thing is better explained by browsing CAUCE (Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail). I was more precise about it a few years ago when it was a problem, but it isn't anymore.

No problem Bruce, I guess it's one way to find out what's in the Internet Options section of the security level. Everything is back to normal, so I will just deal with it till I format...
