Ivan, I don't think I'm the antagonist who's post bothered you, but I did question the "cheap vinyl" solution.
quote: You Might Want to talk her into a Five year vinyl, It's a third the cost and and Orocal has some nice stuff for the Price...
You & your 5 year cast are simply not the issue here. Oracal's lower end stuff has it's place & the price is fantastic, but IMHO it's place is not on a van (especially one I might need to remove it from) Even if using Oracal on a van is a good idea to someone else, it simply doesn't save that much money anyway. Sure it adds up as in Neil's example over a years time where the savings go in your pocket. As for the discussion that began this thread, looking for how to please a low budget client, cheap vinyl can only help so much. (BTW Ivan, the horse you're riding on this thread seems pretty high too I might add.)
HeHe Neil I think replies to you were avoided because you make too good an argument & we've all seen your awesome vehicle work. (I use all Arlon vinyl too. I have a good deal of calandared Arlon too, but never trusted it on vehicles)

ive posted the diff between calendered and hp $$$$$ COST before.....and i cant grasp this thinking that their is almost no differeance in the price. (prices from AMERIBAN-example only, i will not buy 651))24x150 roll of 651 ORA color is $69, the same in 751 is $165. now for $96 differance i can get another color of 651 and have twice as much vinyl to sell. so now if i get $7.50 a linial foot for calendered that 300x $7.50=$2250 return. 751 at $10 linial foot is 150x$10=$1500.....$750 is a lot of money to me, and the chances that any of the ballfield signs, rental trucks, or old used trucks from the tree service are gona last more then 3 years...are slim and none. i always ask the owners of the stuff i put vinyl on.."how long ya keepin this one?" if its a new van, and they will keep it till the wheels fall off, then i explain to them why they need to go to hp vinyl for there truck.

Hey Doug, what's the weather like today? We have great big fat now flakes falling and it's cold, oh so cold, 4 months to go untill I tee off, can't wait!
Yes you should try the Arlon intermediate on some of the Vehicles, then again you have that Hot Sun to consider don't you. But unless the job has to stay on for over 5 years this will do, This stuff weeds better, and lasts just as long as some of the cast stuff I've used.
By the way thanks for the compliment. Us Canadians do appreciate it.

Neil, I honestly wish I were there in the snow you're getting today. It is probably about 85 degrees here at 11:00 am. very few clouds, nice breeze & there is good surf today. Why am I here at the computer, you may ask, well I did just waltz in 3 hours late, but I've been slow to get back to business after the holidays, so I really have to work today.(after checkin' into Letterville of course)
My experience with Arlon calplus is on banners the adhesive never comes off with the vinyl when people want dates changed. If it acts the same way on vehicles I pity the poor souls that change there business name, or try to clean up a vehicle before selling.
Mark, Neil warned you... thought about sayin' something myself. I may be known to stoop to chauvinistic remarks wit my bro's (just to fit in of course ) but in mixed company? NOT!
This customer just now called and doesn't want to spend the $365 as I quoted!! She now wants to know "how much" for JUST THE ONE SIDE!! I honestly can't believe it!!
So, here I go again.. I'll have to adjust the quote for only one side!!
FOR THE RECORD: I certainly hope I haven't offended any of you "SIGN PERSONS" out there with my female related remarks!! (Thanks Neil). I'm just really having fun with this! No pun intended!! And with phone call I just got, this is just way too much fun!! I honestly might actually get this job after all!!

Oh yeah, forgot... OP, your $96 savings on 24 x 150 is less then 33 cents a foot. Even a good sized layout on 1 side & rear of a van doesn't save $15, so if your gonna charge the same either way, yeah, you increase profit, but in a discussion about ways to accomodate low budget clients, you really gotta cut your corners in other ways.
I would tell them I could do a layout & install at my shop maximizing use of material so no waste. I would not offer a computer proof like I usually do (which often ends up including one minor revision on higher cost jobs) If I can keep client consultation time down to one visit, 20 minutes to sketch layout, sell a bargin basement price & collect a deposit, I can eliminate the digital pics, color proofs, design revisions, & the material waste I allow when designing for looks instead of money. I can save myself over 2 hours with a streamlined approach like this & low budget clients are OK with this.
I agree with many others that these clients help pay the bills. A lot of us are quick to go all out with nice designs to upsell a job(even to play with other's layouts here on the board) but we need to learn not to cast "pearls to swine" * and bang out the jobs where are design skills are not requested or paid for.
*(no offense intended to any real clients, any similarity to actual persons is purely coincidental)

Mark, I just read your last post. This is where a policy I've often read of here comes into play. Some folks say to not quote over the phone. I personaly don't run with that policy as a rule, but for this client you got, she should invest some time to come to your shop, let you measure the van, look at your color selection & have her bring her checkbook. If your willing to make adjustments to try to accomodate her, she needs to lay down her cards. How much will she spend, hoe basic will she accept, & hell, you could probably do this job while she walks across the street for a cappchino. (ell, better make that instant from a vending machine up the street at the muffler shop.)

I agree with Doug, it is time for her to step up to the plate. I had the same problem with one of my clients wanting me to swing by, send estimates, designs, etc. I told her that when I get a deposit we'll get serious and she said she understood. That conversation was 3-4 weeks ago and I've been so busy I haven't even had a chance to see if she's still interested.

So you're sorry, eh? You should be!! But you do look like Mr. Niceguy, so we'll forgive you....he he. As for your problem: sell her one magnetic sign instead than she can place it wherever she wants.
Can't help relating that I have a "neighbour" (We live out in the boonies). He has been askin me about "signs" for several years. He has 5 trucks that he owns and has drivers who drive them. I kept telling him prices..he kept telling me I was to expensive..I didn't care.
Finaly, last fall he "needed" a truck re-lettered and re-graphicted (hehehehe is that a word??) including old vinyl removal. I gave him the price and he said OK. He is now a convert!!!! (a couple of hours of vinyl removal REALLY impressed him too!)

Someone mentioned about doing a truck once, only one door so the guy could go for liquid lunches and it not look bad on him. I have a guy that wanted magnetics for pretty much the same reason. Instead, I explained how magnetics fall off, look temporary, etc. I got him to letter his truck, then made a set of magentics painted the same color of the truck that he can put on over the lettering job to hide his name when he goes to no-no places. There is more than 1 way to skin a cat....

I've made Chris's suggestion many times as well. The no-no places are usually like the dump where commercial vehicles have to pay & residential vehicles don't. (At least that's what they say)
