I am using 1/2" PVC as a background panel 4'x8'. I need to paint it a rusty orange color. I am then going to put another 1/2" PVC panel on top of it that is 30" x 78" which will be painted a slightly lighter hue. This top panel will receive digital graphics and raised text. QUESTION: What do I use paint PVC with. What primer, finish coat etc. I will probably roll it on since I don't know how to spray. (Should I job it out to someone who sprays? ...phew..long question.

I use a roller, and it comes out fine -- i thin the paint a little bit (1-Shot reducer or Chromatic Edge), which seems to help it flow out. I used to not thin it, and there was too much roller texture afterwards. nobody else seems to do that, but it works for me.

Spraying is even nicer, and maybe faster, but i don't think you need to bother.

You can paint 1-Shot directly onto PVC. Its a good idea to wipe it first with alcohol to remove any residue. You could prime first with 1-shot Acryllic Bonding Primer, but you don't have to. It might make a difference if your sign is going to get a lot of wear (ie, something people could touch), but if its just hanging on the wall it doesn't matter.

The only "trick" to PVC panels is the edges -- it sucks up paint, especially the 1/2" thick and thicker stuff. It takes three or four coats to get the edges nice. You can fill the edges with light body filler (glazing compound), then sand and paint for a nicer edge. Or, you can just put some PVC edgecap trim on and let it be.

Hope that helps.

The two mst reliable paints I use are...Centari Automotive finishes. It gives a really nice finish thats both durable and receptive to vinyl or enamels.(You'll need a spray gun and compressor.

The one I really like is Nazdar Vinyl ink...it smells like hell but gives a finish that is as close to vandal proof as you can get(you can groove the material and never affect the paint)...the paint really penetrates and leaves a very nice (architectural grade) matte finish...that is receptive to vinyl or vinyl inks (wouldn't use this if your going over it with One Shot.

And the edges are perfect with either of these mediums (no tricks needed)

We usually spray paint pvc with acrylic latex house paint - gloss or semi gloss. One-shot didn't work for us. We are starting to get into automotive paints but our understanding is that you should have a spray booth with an explosion-proof fan. This can be an expensive investment. I'd like to hear from other painters on this topic.

I just finished a site for a pvc sign blank company which contains some useful FAQs on painting and silkscreening PVC.

Their address is www.bettersigns.com

I roll on a thin coat of white FLAT latex house paint for a base coat.....then roll on a top coat of a BULLITIN enamel. That combo seems to last forever.
