How long do you guarantee your blasted signfoam signs that you have installed? I have a project that will be a 4' x 5' double faced blasted signfoam sign installed at the entrance to an upscale apartment complex using 6x6 posts and 2x4's for the framing. Believe it or not I have been in business for 11 years now and never have had anyone question how long this type of sign will last I have several signs in town that are similar and have been out there for 4-5 years and a few of them have had to be repainted by now but other than that they are fine. What do you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike McLeod
I don't give a gaurantee out with ANYTHING I make! Not vinyl, not foam, nadda, zip, zilch.
You actually make up a form that says you will replace a sign if it doesn't hold up? And sign it with your signature?
I dont think so. You don't make vinyl; you dont make foam; so let the companies that actually make the stuff give them a garantee.
Do you see any forms that come in a box of vinyl that remotely looks like a guarantee! I never got one!
I dont guarantee Edge prints....the customer is strickly warned if they screw them up they are going to have to pay to replace them! I had one guy rub laquer thinner over his truck to remove tar and it ruined his edgeprinted graphics and then he came crying to me!
Now You can say this product should hold up so many years unless a truck hits it, or an act of God takes it out.
Everything needs maintenance, and the customer has to pay for maintenance.

Dave I may be abit soft! I don't give written guarantees, but if somebody screws something up...like I have had a few occasions where vinyl (cast HP) has been partly removed by steam cleaners, I warn people about this, but people do ring occasionally and mention they got abit close, when washing the vehicle! I normally say drop by after work one evening and I will change the damaged parts....I do this free, and feel that its good PR. For what little time it takes and for what little it costs, I would rather have a happy customer going around feeling that he got good service from me that me saying "Too bad...." when he comes back, bad news travels faster than good whoever is at fault!
AS for Sign-foam it has a five year factory guarantee, and with all things needs maintainance, we have signs out here that are sandblasted and have been up over 5 yaers painted with Deka Sign Enamels, some fading but the signs still look good, I guess alot depends on your climate and if the sign is south facing, we clear all HDU signs with a clear that has UV inhibitors to help out, like One Shot Speed Dry 4005.

It's interesting you bring this up because I have never had anyone ask for a guarantee or even a remote idea how long something I did would last. Granted, most of what I do is vinyl and web graphics.. =)
I wouldnt give a guarantee though, but if the customer insists on something of the sort, you can always add a maintenance package to the deal. Based on your past experience it seems like 4 years is a good average before the sign needs repainting. Evidently none of the signs have fallen apart yet so here's something you can do..
Tell the customer it's going to be around for at least four years unless there is some outside force that destroys it like a car goin through it.. =) If they are apprehensive about it, offer an upgrade where you will come to the site once a year and inspect the condition of the sign. Since you already said yer gettin 4 years before the paint starts to fade, the inspection should take less than 10 minutes.. =)

My earliest large HDU murals are 8' high, 20' long and 4" thick. You can see some of them on my website. www.stmariegraphics.com
After we stumbled on Pelucid we went back and coated every single one of them, hermetically sealing them against the elements. Montana elements can be pretty severe. All of them still look like the day we did them. No color fading and zero deterioration. Sealing HDU is a big deal for us. We don't want to have to go back......ever.
