For the last several years I have been hosting a small meet for those folks in the industry who wanted to learn the basics of hand carving as it applies to sign making. I've dubbed the meet, "Chisel Jam"! It will be held Feb. 7-9 at my studio in East Canaan CT which is in the beautiful foothills of the Berkshires. The fee is $50 which covers all meals and supplies. Rooms in the area run between $75 and $85....the nearest being rooms in a beautiful, old country inn. For those on a limited budget, you can camp out at my place (bring a sleeping bag and pillow). For those who wish to fly in, arrangements can be made to pick you up at Bradley Field in Hartford CT. Because I have a very small studio, attendence will be strictly limited.
If you have any questions or need more information.....post away!

Cheryl, I wish you could too! BTW, Get yourself a slip stone and put the micro bevel on your tools before you use them and you won't have to worry about having to grind them for a long time! Another little tip , fold a small piece of towel and put it on your work surface so that the blades rest on the towel (the handles will NOT be on the towel). This will help prevent the tools from accidentally bumping into each other....BIG problems if you nick an edge on steel Anything else I can do to help, just call or Email away! "Make Chips!"

OK Thanks Joe...my kids got me the chisels. They are Chrome Vanadium Steel Mastergrip. I don't know if these are beginner tools or what. They knew I wanted chisels...and by gumps that is what they got me! I will probably be emailing you with advice as I know nothing about carving. Thanks again!

I wanted to take your class at the Mars Meet, but decided to concentrate on learning to use the Brush with Mike Meyers and a bunch of other heads (which was very cool I might add)!!
This time I'll be in Park City Utah for a skiing trip with my sisters and brother.
Will ya take me next time?? Will ya?? Will ya?

Joe, someday we'll meet and let the chips fly, but it won't be this February.
There is a tool that I favor that I've not been able to find a source for recently. Are you familiar with the visible grinding wheel you put into the drill press?

Hey JOE! I ABSOLUTLY LOVED your booth in Atlantic City....WOW, great stuff! (except fer you know who's stuff ) Got any picks of it to post?
I'm glad you ased about donating material! I'll have 10 or 15 folks and we'll do a lot with the HDU. I'm thinking of a meet panel that we can do both incised and raised prismatic, or round face lettering....1x12x16" 15lb and maybe a few extra that I can use for cutouts (stars, pineapples etc.) @ 1 1/2" x 12 x12". I would also love to try some of the 18lb. Wow, that sounds like a lot! Can you help? That certainly would be a big help!
Thanks in Advance!

I was rather pleased with that booth as well….and yes I do have some photos but most have "you-know-who" in them! As far as the Sign•Foam is concerned, I am happy to help. Do me a favor and fax your list along with a shipping address to 949-489-1891. Send it attention Saundra, she is head of our customer relations, and she’ll make sure you get what you want, and when you want it.
Best Regards …..and let me know how it goes for you.
Joe
