We recieved a new DVD player for Christmas... and a few prize DVD's to start our collection of course.
While the movies certainly appear better than ever before in a home environment (and I will get around to watching them eventually), the best part of this new set-up are the extras that appear on the discs... the behind the scene peeks at how all these amazing movies are made.
The ones I have enjoyed so far are the making of star wars, and all the art created in the making of Lord of the Rings. Simply amazing! And educational too!
It warmed my heart to see some names of folks long in the movie industry still on the leading edge, both in their accomplishments and skills.
While I have stuck firmly with tried and true methods of my craft for years (stubbornly I might add) I feel the time is right to move on, not abandoning what I know, but rather using this hard won knowlege to become even better with current matterials and methods.
For I have what many beginners to this craft don't have.... lots of hans-on experience.
Modern methods of foam construction and modern tools such as the computerized hot wire cutter can help me achieve incredible works of art much easier than it could ever be done before. I am learning lots about modern fiberglass proceedures, hardcoats, new finishing techniques, paints and a hundred other things. I can tackle projects of scale and complexity that I could scarcely imagine before. And it frees me to think and imagine projects in totally new ways. Anything I can dream up is now possible...
The modern tools will in no way replace the skills and knowlege I have but rather help me to realize my fullest possible potential. With the old tools and skills available in my toolbox I can still go back there when needed for special details not achieved any other way.
The project I'm currently working on will use all of these tools and also the knowlege and skill of the entire team I am currently gathering to assist me.
I look forward with great anticipation to all I am able to learn along the way! It's going to be a great year!
Happy New Year to all!

Merry Christmas Dan! You are an inspiration! I've enjoyed watching the way you have evolved since I took the Moose Jaw mural course from you. I don't know if you caught one of my other posts where I mentioned Ruth Hamilton, who also took that course, but in case you didn't I thought you would find it charming to know that she finally got her mural in Moose Jaw and painted it when she was in her 90's. My daughters and I had the pleasure of helping her with it. She sure is an amazing person. She got to paint a mural of the store her father owned on the actual building he owned. My family - I was the one with the six kids- are all pretty much grown now. My youngest will graduate high school this June and my second oldest is getting married in July. 2003 promises to be a year of milestones in our family. Your newest project sounds like it will be great fun. I am also messing around with foam and fiberglass techniques - although on a far smaller scale than you. I love having my own shop that I can play in and though it hasn't been that rewarding finacially it holds its own and has been so rewarding emotionally. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the results of your new venture. Hope 2003 is filled with new ideas and inspiration for us all.
