After a week of dealing with a nasty case of bronchitis, I'm finally beginning to feel like myself again. Tonight I jumped on the puter and headed for Letterville Chat to see how the rest of you were dealing with this busy and stressful time of year.
Getting together with Letterhead Pals, in person or online, always seems to give me a boost. Over the years, many of us have formed some close relationships. I find myself wishing we could all get together just to enjoy each other's company. It's important for all to know that others really do care about them.
A live Christmas Party that includes all of Letterville is not possible, but there is something we can do. Everyone on chat seemed keen on the idea so this is what we propose.
We're having an on-line Letterville Christmas Party at the #letterville chat channel. It's all happening next Monday evening! That's Monday, Dec. 23 at 10pm EST.
Our goal is to get as many of you participating as possible. We're going to try contacting everyone that has ever been involved with Letterville, and invite them to come renew some old friendships. I want to invite all of you to do the same. Look up those special people you miss and email or phone them. Tell them about the Christmas Party and invite them to join in.
Some reading this may not have a clue about Letterville Chat. That's ok...we have a whole week to teach you how to chat and practise what you learn. Post your questions below and we'll see they get answered. Letterville has a gang of Chat Ops that are eager to help out.
There is a basic how to on chat at http://www.letterhead.com/chatpals/chat.html This will teach you how to download, install and use the mIRC Chat Program. Don Coplen will be watching this post to assist anyone using a Mac.
So there is your project for the week. Seek out old friends and encourage all to get involved with this. I'm working on my list now. Are ya there Golden? LazyEdna? Fontzy? Axyl? Covey? Gnarley? Jakk? LetterC? Signtist? Sarah? We're coming to get ya!

Check chat before you turn in Miles. There's always a good chance someone will be there early.
I've tried contacting many of the original Letterville Chat Pals. Unfortunitly, many have changed addresses, but there is a chance they may have seen this post.
If you have been MIA for sometime, you need to know that Letterville Chat is not on Dalnet anymore. A couple of years ago, we swithed to the Webnet chat server. Here's some information from Dave Grundy that explains everything.
When you first start up mIRC, there is a box that appears with the picture of the guy who wrote the program, close it.
Next box is the one where you connect to the server of your choice. You can either scroll down the list until you see several "webnet" servers and connect to one of those servers....OR you can go to "add" and add a server.
To do that you click on ADD at the top right and in the next box that pops up you type WEBMASTER where it says "description" and type irc.webmaster.com where it says "IRC Server". The default port of 6667 is OK. Now click OK and the list of servers will now include the one named WEBMASTER.
Fill in your personal info at the bottom of the window (nickname etc.) and click "CONNECT to IRC SERVER".
Once you are connected a new window will appear titled "IRC Channels folder". Under the words "enter name of channel to join" type in #letterville and hit "ADD". This will add #letterville to the list of channels. At that point you highlight #lettervile in the list and click on "JOIN" and you will be there.
I only use #letterville so I have no need for all of the other channels that are automatically listed so I just delete all the ones that are above #letterville and every time I log on it is the first one in the list.
Once you have connected to the IRC network and joined #letterville, you might get a message from "chanserv" or "nickserv" that the nickname you have chosen already belongs to someone else, and asking you to identify yourself. In order to do that, AND to make sure that no one else can come along later and use your nickname you need to register that nickname.
To do that you use the "staus" window and type in these words /msg nickserv register nickname (where I have used the word "password" you need to actually enter a real password). Once you do that you will possibly be asked to re-enter the information, including your e-mail address. Do that and you will have a registered nickname, so that in the future, when requested to identify your self you just type in /nickserv identify password (again using the actual password).
CYA tonight on mIRC
