My basic cost using premium vinyl (mostly Callon2)is $90/metre cut using 600mm vinyl or about ten times material cost ... ie about $9/metre buying full rolls. If I do the same 1 metre job in "el Cheapo" Vinyl for $90/metre I'm going to save my self the princely sum of $3 maybe $4 in materials.
Or do I pass the saving on to the customer:)ie: $96 job? Or do I use the same formula and say 10x $6 material cost = $60 job ... hell no ... same labour content!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CUT AND PASTED THIS FROM BUSHIES POST.
now my take on hp vs intermediate...is $$$$ vs. $$$$ also and i see it a whole lot different.
i use AVERY,GMI, BANNERCAL and have no problems with lifting, shrinking, fading(all most short tem signs anyway) as for dollars spent
i can buy(using AMERIBAN PRICE BOOK) a roll of 20"x 50 yrd intermediate from AVERY for $73.50 ok, now a roll of avery HP $204.00 now that is a big diff...of $130.50 so for that 130.50 if i add $16.50 more(price of 3 roll of inter) i got THREE TIMES AS MUCH VINYL!!!!! now i got 3 differnt colors and 3 times as much vinyl for the same amount of money as if i bought one roll of HP. now i aint no rocket scientist....but sound to me like iam futher ahead with 3 rolls vs 1 roll. selling the product now is what you need to do now. ok...i just sold 85 feet of 20" wide vinyl as R.T.A. (cut ,weed tape and hand to buyer) i dont charge as much for this as i do when i apply vinyl...so i get $7.50 a foot(20"x 12") now its a lot of weeding i did taping is also alot. but if i sold 3 rolls of intermediate @ 7.50 a runnin foot...that would be $7.50 x 450 ft.=$3375.00 for a $220.50 vinyl expense. ok... now if i took that $204.00 i spent for the roll of HP... and got $10.00 a running foot....i would get $2040.00. so now lets do this...$204 spent get $2040 back so its $1836 profit. now the intermediate $220 spent, $3375.75 returned... is $3155.50 profit.
plus i had 3 colors to choose from and had more stock for less money....then if i bought 3 rolls of hp.
so bottom line here is $204=$1836 or 9 times your investment, $220=$3155.50 or 14.3 return on money invested? with only a $16 dollar diff in money spent....looks like a better deal in my wallet.

i also use HP VINYLS...on jobs that require it...most stuff i do aint around more the 3 years....and the one that i use HP on will be....

It all depends on the kind of work you do.

I dont do much short term stuff, most of my work is vehicle graphics, and while I personally prefer paint, if I had to choose between intermediate and HP for my own vehicle, I would choose the higher end material.

When it comes to inventory, I don't keep much hanging around and it's for this reason I only use HP films no matter what the expectations of the job are. I'd rather have all HP film than some day finding out that the color I need for a job is on my shelf, but it's useless because it's a cheap film and now I have to order the same color in HP!

When you break it down on a per-job basis, the actual difference in materials cost is pretty slim.

I see a lot of people pricing vinyl by the material cost.. ie: 10X cost.. but some people use that same formula when they price a job using intermediate film which cuts their price by 66%!!

I just stock 24" X 50 yds. of HP for everything, and charge accordingly. The first thing this does is give me a smaller inventory to deal with, secondly, HP is just better vinyl, and third, there's less confusion all the way around.

95% 2 mil cast here. I do, however, keep a roll each of black, red and blue in 3 mil calendered since those are the three most common colours used in making "cheapo" signs.

Bob..ALL of mine are priced correctly!!!

Cheapo signs get cheapo materials..I still get the same labour price and profit margin.

ADD ON: i also have a mobile shop, so i have to have a fair assortment of colors...and for stickers, windshield banners, window signs....all get intermediate. i stock 20"x150'(have 2 cutters and they both can use the 20") in these i keep, white, red, blue, black, yellow, orange(damn vols fans)green, teal and maroon! now thats 9 colors at $70 a roll so that $630 in inventory. if this was all hp it would $204 a roll for $1836!!!!! cant do that. i also have some hp 20"x 30' rolls...in the metalic silver, gold, some blue and red...but i upcharge on these. as for gold and silver i dont use intermediate for them, the hp is not that long lasting either.....but the intermeadiate is way bad.

I have had the "priveledge" of redoing several signs
and vehicles done by several different companies lately, like one the other day where a word was mispelled and the other sign maker refused to redo the word. All have been done with calendered vinyl. I sometimes get the distinct feeling that I am the only signmaker in my area that uses HP vinyl. That drives me up the wall because the other guys are pricing according to using cal. vinyl just to be the lowballer it seems. I now give the customer the price using HP and cal. and explain to them the difference between the 2 and let them decide.
