Is there anyone interested in installing two stretch banners on a double faced 24x8 billboard in Escambia County?

I was going to install them but they told me that I would need an Escambia County contractor's license which will set me back $200. No sense in paying that since it is over 100 miles away and unlikely that I will be installing anymore signs there in the near future.

BTW, how long is the license good for?

If anyone is interested, I will e-mail the details.
Thanks

Hi Wayne - Contractors license to install banners? That's pretty tough restrictions. I just wonder who the taxpayers are paying to enforce that. Wonder what would happen if the banners in question mysteriously appeared say, over the weekend?

Carl,
I have to admit......that is tempting. But I don't want to risk any trouble with the local authorities. There are perfectly good reasons to require permits and licenses on most signs, such as safety, incompetence and fraud. But sometimes, in cases like this, you do wonder why it's necessary.

It's about 115 miles to the place anyway so I'd rather just get someone over there to install them.

Wayne...

Is that a contractors license in that county, or are they referring to a state license for billboards. They used to have such a thing and the fee used to be $200.OO, if I recall correctly.

Is it on a major road? The state license might be worth getting if you wanted to have several sights, but not for just two...

Jeff,
I was told a few years ago that the state license was in fact required for billboards. This license is required by the "Escambia County Contractor Competency Board" and is labeled only as "sign erector". The person I spoke with there said that the test/license was required by the state @ $100 and could be "reciprocated" to various counties (including theirs) for another $100. That could get a mite expensive if you put up signs in several counties.

I primarily install sandblasted signs, wood frame metal signs and the like and don't normally deal with billboards.

Wayne..

There might be some confusion here. The billboard license is issued by the DOT in Lake City, and is good for one year. The state sign contractors license is actually the state ELECTRICAL sign contractors license, and requires passing an exam, after which you get a numerical No. similar to heat and air guys. There is no state license that covers painted signs and such; instead various munincipalities require an occupational license with a comp card in some.

If these signs are already licensed by the DOT, with a small license plate on them, then I don't believe I would worry about buying another occ. lic.

I don't know Jeff, maybe they're more strict in Escambia county. They faxed over ten pages outlining the requirements. The first page is entitled "Sign Contractor, Non-Electrical and begins with "Scope.......Those who are qualified to install, repair, add, or change non-electrical signs according to the building code". It then goes on to list the exam contents, open book, three hours for the test, reference books needed etc. Then there is the test score requirements, experience verification etc.

I just pulled the permit for two sandblasted signs in Jackson County and there was no mention of any license.

This thread brings to mind an real need for a STATE licence. In Arizona and others, you get your licence and you are good for the whole state, electrical and non-electrical.
