Got a "new" book yesterday. A Show of Shocards by Atkinson and Atkinson. 1918 Edition. Cost me $65 Oz($32.50 US).
What takes pride of place on your bookshelf?

Dave...

I have an old hard cover book "Electrical Advertising Sketch Portfolio" by Sam Kamin, which is full of line drawings of various sign shapes and border designs. This was carried as a sales tool for selling the old, ornate metal sign cabinets that usually had cut out letters with glass inserts, illuminated by interior incondescent lamps, as well as exterior border lights. This all was in the days before neon. Very detailed book with lots of drawings and a photo apendix with night shots of some of the signs all lit up...theator marques, banks, drug stores, etc. Very rare.

Also have "Better Sign Painting" by Ralph Gregory, and "New Practical Sign Painting" by Robert E. Owen., both are 1958-1960 era.

Wish I had more...I like old books on the trade. [Smile]

Earlier this year I found a first edition (1898) of Hillicks Carriage and Wagon Painting. Some paint damage on the covers and a few silverfish chewed pages but overall good nick considering it's a technical book.

Got my copy of Practical Sign Shop Operation by Bob Fitsgerald back in 1956. For someone just starting out on their own it was a great help.
Had the pleasure of meeting Bob many years later at a Letterhead meet and was able to thank him for his good work.

The next best book was LeBlanc's book on Gold Leaf. Now rewritten by Kent Smith. Haven't found any better.

Robert,

You can get the Hillick book as a reprint for a little under $20 US. Try a search through Yahoo.

Unfortunately [Frown] the spine on the Atkinson book is to fragile to copy it. However, every cloud has a silver lining, I now have an excuse to do a course on book restoration [Smile] .
