Trying to help my Dad with his computer....
It's a Compact Presario, a bit old...he didn't know anything about defraging, cleaning out the cache or scan disc, so I ran all that for him...but it's still really slow to respond to anything. (i.e. clicking on close window and wait 20 seconds)
Anything else I can do(other than throw it out the window and get a new one)I'm not real familiar with this sort of thing.

Is there enough free space on the Hard Drive for windows to use for it's swap files??? (at least 2-300M is nice)
When you boot the computer, most systems display the amount of memory, such as 64M (well actualy a slightly smaller number, like 63234K) A bad or loose memory chip will reduce the memory.
Did you do a virus scan???
also, check the programs automaticly started up (often they just stay in the bar at the bottom, or have no visible signs at all, and could bog down the system)
Did he make any changes, add or delete programs, etc, just before this happened.
Any odd noises, unusual disk activity??
Does it work OK on the WIN startup disk???

Bless your heart! I've been just where you are. My Dad had an older Presario. He actually had 2. I was going to throw mine out several years ago and he just had to have it. I really hated it the whole time I had it because Compaq is all proprietary and you can't upgrade much at all. I worked on that thing for him nearly every weekend. Until it eventually blew a capacitor. Then he bought another off eBay and I had to rebuild him one out of the two. He spent enough on that thing trying to upgrade to buy himself a decent computer.
What it comes down to is your Dad just needs a new computer, really. You'll both be a lot happier! My Dad finally gave up and bought himself a good system. Only problem is, I hardly see him anymore!

Get a long eyebolt, drive it thru the puter, add a washer and nut on it and sell it as a boat anchor, use that as a down payment on a new puter for your dad!
You will both be happier!
