I've priced out a sign using Dibond. Now the customer has asked me if we can make the sign look "more substantial" (ie, thicker than 1/8" Dibond).
I was thinking of applying that colored trim stuff that's used for lighted acryllic letters. (the stuff i'm thinking of is sold by Gemini and its about 1-1/8" wide, and glues onto the edge of the letters). Would that work? its a 9' x 3' oval sign. Is there a better way?

Scooter, you are talking about neon trim cap. You can buy it from any of the local electric sign supply houses.
Neon people use a steel table top and magnets. You lay the sign face down, arrange the trim cap, hold it with magnets, then put a bead of adhesive around the inside back edge. You can do something similar with plywood and finishing nails.
Trim cap has no mechanical strength, so you will need standoffs to keep from crushing the trim cap.

A lot of cheap signs that look good are 2" foam then the i/8" face w/ trim cap. Be carful on a face panel that large, it will expand and contract much more than the foam. Then the glue comes apart. You need to put some "pins" in the back first. sand the back then silicone to the foam. Ask me how I know!

forget the "Trim Cap" it there is no way to make it stick and stay on the Dibond...if you want the dibond to look thicker there are some easier ways.
One way would be to add a piece of aluminum ...(040)broke over twice at 90 degrees (make a channel...you pick the diminsions)and apply it with hvp "Isotak" 3/4" tape.
An even simpler way would be to adhere 2" foam (Dow board) either full sheet or just around the edges...sand smooth and paint with Latex.
