A dear friend of mine is a self-employed musician/songwriter as well as a total computer geek...I've sent him an email to ask if he has any suggestions. I'll let you know what he says.

CakeWalk is a pretty powerful music writing program. It's designed more for use with MIDI instruments but you can use the program itsself to write the tabs for any instrument. It can also capture notes from MIDI instruments as you play them, which can be added to the tabs, then the software can play all the instruments back to you while you play another instrument, all while CakeWalk is recording what you are playing, right over the music you've already recorded.
It *is* a professional level recording package so be prepared to spend some bucks.
There's also SoundForge which is another professional level recording studio and music editing program.

I haven't been able to use it much lately but I got Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 in 1998 and it is a really powerful music recording and editing program. You have to get a decent system to run it to it's full potential though. Got to get a really good multiple in and out sound card and lots of RAM and a really fast hard disc. If you are just looking for a notation program so you can write music, Cakewalk also used to make a progam for that. Cakewalk stuff is by far the best stuff for the money. I am not sure what version of their professional software they have now. They also were always right on top of problems and had patches and fixes up ASAP. It used to be www.cakewalk.com , probably still is. You can dig around and get the older versions like I have and the next and better on Pro Audio 9 which would be great for a 98 machine, off of the web at software discounters pretty cheap. At the least though, get a good recording sound card at the same time, it'll make a world of difference.

quote:Well, he doesn't really need a computer to write songs. Jackson Browne didn't need one! All he needs is a guitar ,a 4-track tape recorder, and a mic.
However, if he wants to do the whole midi music studio thing he can try a program called "Reason". It's like a virtual studio program. It has built in emulated synthesizers and sounds.
It even has a user interface that looks like a rack of music equipment.
I think it's around 300-400.

Hi Ian, I've got a link for you. The multi track software I used for all my submissions on the Songpainter CD in called n-Tracks. ntrack.com
How does $45 grab you?
These people have an enthusiastic users group with a very active and helpful BB to get you up & running, and keep you growing. (Kind of like Letterheads!). Serious good gang over there. Go lurk their BB and see. This runs on very basic machines. The more power and speed you have, the more tracks and effects you can run simultaneously, but even a basic pentium class PC with low end 16 bit soundcard can pull off 12 - 16 tracks with ease. Upgrade if you need to do 38 track projects or record at 24 bit. Check it out.

PS, n-Tracks will let you download and run a demo if you want to prove to yourself that it works to your satisfaction before you buy it. Note however, that the nag screens and limited functionality of the demo will make you want to buy it real quick, to get full access to the goodies. For what it's worth, I've spent a lot of time working with it so I might even be able to answer some questions. Does this mean you will be working on some submissions for the upcoming, soon to never be released SongpainterII?
