I have tried everything, and I can't find anywhere that teaches airbrushing, or someone that is willing to help. Is there anyone in Michigan that is willing to help, or knows of any place? Where can I find a letterhead event in michigan? Thanks alot

buy an airbrush, compressor, paint and a bunch of back issues of airbrush action magazine and spend hours and hours at painting circles, dots, etc. then when you've got a handle on that, copy some step-by-steps and make a picture....you're on your way!

Hit it right on the head Gailforce! You've got to learn how to make the airbrush perform for you befor you can realy express your creativity with it, and the only way to do that is through practice and experimentation. There are loads of books and video tapes availible that you can learn the basics from. The advantage they have is the ability to replay or re-read sections that are giving you trouble as many times as needed. There are two books that I would recommend to you which will really help you out in the beging and they are availible from Amazon.com which this web site sponsers or you can order them direct from AIRBRUSH ACTION MAGAZINE at 1-800-232-8998 THe books are #1 Getting Started in Airbrushing, by Miller & Martin , Northern Light Books. THe #2 Airbrush, the Complete Studio HandBook by Radu Vero, Watson & Guptill Books. Get a paper towel dispenser and one of those huge packages of plain paper towels. Attach the paper towel rack at the top of a long piece of masonite or plywood so that you can set it up on your easel when you want to practice. Then all ya gotta do is roll out some paint surface and hold it dowm with cloths pins an go nuts! I recommend getting some Black Createx Textile ink (Large Bottle) most seriouse art stores carry it. Once you are able to exicute a picture on paper towel using only black ink with good control of line values and proper shading etc... then get some Createx Auto Air (Water Based) or 1-shot/reducer and some white Masonite, and start all over again learning how to do the same things on a non pourous slick surface. Once you can consistantly control the airbrush on masonite nothing can stop you. Please don't be foolish, wear a resperator when ever you are airbrushing! Yes, even with waterbased paint! It can still get into your lungs and cause long term damage...once you've got the basics under control there are loads of tips and tricks videos and you might even consider a letterhead meet or a seminar. You can also check with the Detroit Area Arts councel or art studios in the area who may know of airtest in the area that may be willing to help you...the two books will give you a great start. Any questions, just e-mail me, I've got about 25 years experiance with all kinds of airbrush projects. Robin

Forgot to tell you why I recommend the paper towel and textile ink first. Its cheaper and much more forgiving when your first trying to control the airbrush. Large amounts of paint that you did not intend on expelling from the airbrush tend to soak into the paper towel and don't look as bad as big old spider web bloches that will result when doing the same thing on a non pourous surface... and you tend not to get so frustrated so quickly! If you can execute a great picture using only black ink and not being concerned about color mixes a tone values, then adding color will be a new adventure that you can persue without having to worry about learning the airbrush as well... Good Luck, Robin
Check out this year's list of live meets at www.letterhead.com/events.html Nothing will help you get up and running faster than a live meet.
