We're experimenting with a "stained glass" project. The plan is to use transparent vinyl on glass which I think will work fine except we would like to have a better simulation of actual stained glass. My memory (or imagination?) tells me that there is a "crackled" clear vinyl that we could put on first, then cover with transparent hoping to achieve a more realistic look. Has anyone seen this type of product?
Also I would appreciate any feedback on vinyl - stained glass projects.
Cheers........Mick Classen

they make a frosted vinyl...for the etched glass look...that might be useful in your project...what are you doing for the solder lines? or am i correct in assuming that you are making a sign with a glass background to look like a stained glass piece...i've done some neat things mixing stained glass and clear resin on to wood.

Mick, check out Shep' (Arvil Shepperd) on this board. He's done some faux stained glass, not with vinyl, tho, but might be interesting for you.

Here's something I did recently. I replaced the front door of the shop which had a window above the door. I wanted to plug the hole with another type of window so I decided to try to make it look like stained glass. This is a scrap piece of 3/16" clear Acrylite, with vinyl (black outlines) and backpainted krylon fades. Everything is on the back except for the "157". Looks pretty neat with light behind it at night. We use to have a retail business here in town called SGO. That stands for stained glass overlay. Basically they were taking a mylar based film (in many colours and patterns) and a fake lead cane material with adhesive back. They could make all kinds of things that look like stained glass. I know they were part of a franchise operation that had outlets across the country.
I just typed stained glass overlay into Google and got all kinds of hits. The second one on the list looks like a source for the mylar and lead material.
I hope you can find this stuff in SK in the winter time. Is the snow up to the roof line yet?

Hey there, Opened my shop almost a year ago...I decided not to use the old illuminated sign box that was on my store front. It was in bad condition an we don't really do lit faces here. I decided to simply do my windows to look like stained glass, which also serves as my store identification.I can send you photos of the process and the results if you like...this effect looks great... especially at night with the window florescents on. Good luck with your project!

I should also add that because of the 'stained glass' treatment on my storefront we've been hired to do the same in a real estate office so the owner can close the stained glass door when he works late, as a privacy thing. An interior designer often orders the vinyl and we install on customers' homes. as well, several other downtown stores have requested this be done because it is a very classic look as well as being waterproof, and washable,(changeable if desired later on) We've used this on coffee table inserts, greenhouse and bathroom windows where privacy was required without blocking some of the natural light.
