I have had this nagging issue for months since I upgraded my computer. I have Acrobat Reader 4.0 & if I double click a pdf file it opens fine, but when I click a link in Explorer that (I guess) is supposed to display a pdf file I get the error message "could not launch acrobat" in front of a blank screen with a little broken link icon in the corner.

Anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem? I am using IE 6.0 on a W98 machine.

On a somewhat related topic, anyone use the PDF-Online page to attempt to create a pdf file? You can sign up to recieve a trial privilege to convert from various eligible files to pdf files. The trial allows for 5 free conversions. My attempt to submit a multi-page illustrator file failed 4 times already, but I tested the service on an HTML file & it worked fine.

I created a 20 page package of sign layouts, spec sheets, & shop drawings for an architectural signage contract. The drawings were done in Illustrator & I would like to create a PDF file that allows anyone with Acrobat reader to open the packet of drawings & scroll through all 20 pages. I don't expect to need to do this type of thing often enough to buy the Acrobat full version. Adobe, understandably, does not offer support on this free service, so I hoped someone here may know about how to get the conversion to work. Or if anyone can do the conversion for me that would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance

Doug,
I don't know how to fix your problem, bu they do have version 5.0 available for download on thier website. Maybe this will fix your problem.

Thanks Troy, I downloaded & installed 5.0 & went back to the link I had tried, but still no go. It did, however, pop up with a different error message this time...

I have come across a couple of machines that have upgraded Acrobat reader from V4 to V5 but have a mucked up file association in Windows.
You might be able to work around this by going to Windows Explorer/Options/File Types then scollling to Adobe Acrobat Document and editing the file association so that it points to the current exe file, which should be "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"

David

Doug, I have Acrobat, Explorer and DSL combo. I did the same thing last week, and it took forever to come up. 2 minutes on DSL is forever.... My guess, by the way that it acted was it was taking a lot of bandwidth for the server to key the program in my computer or to load the info to the program. On a slower connection that would be an hour. Jack

Problem Solved!

Thanks to all of you, as I think it was a combination of tips.

After installing 5.0 attempting to access the site that required acrobat still failed. Upon checking the windows explorer-tools-folder options-file types it did need editing as it was looking for the version 4 in a different location.

After fixing that I went back to the link ( http://www.ndgraphics.com/nd_pages/openhouses/images/LETTER1102.pdf ) & it failed again.

I decided to try opening 5.0 first & when it launched I got a message "you will not be able to view PDF files in your browser due to a allocation problem - do you want Adobe to fix this?"

So, I guess 5.o was able to detect & fix the problem on it's own, & then the correct location being assigned in explorer was already fixed, so I'm all taken care of on that issue. Thanks again all.

Last Issue: Create PDF! anyone do this? any clues on converting 20 illustrator pages into one 220 inch tall PDF document?

Doug,

I bought Adobe Acrobat 5.0 about 6 months ago and have never regretted it. I create PDF files all the time to email to my customers. Most, but not all, know what a PDF "Acrobat Reader" file is.

It's as simple as selecting your object, or page, hitting "print" and then selecting Acrobat Distiller as your printer.

When Acrobat opens your image, just one more click and it opens Outlook Express, ready to send the file to your customer.

The 20 Illustrator pages can be done exactly the same way. Acrobat will make 20 separate pages, each with a thumbnail.
