I am trying to work on my new web page. Trying to make simple rollovers like I have on my existing page is not working right. When I preview in Fireworks or within my browser only parts with slices or hotspots are showing up. I can't figure out why.
I look at my old page in .png format, which is currently online at www.ambodesign.com, and I can't see what I am doing any differently than before.
This is driving me nuts. If anyone can help it would be great. I will call you or email you if you leave contact info.
Thanks!

Do you have Dreamweaver as well? Assigning rollovers in Fireworks is somewhat of a pain (in my opinion), and I have always found it easier and more flexible to do this in dreamweaver.
I believe that with fireworks, slices are necessary for making rollovers anyway.

I have Dreamweaver but I don't know how to use it very well. I am basically making little sections to plug into Dreamweaver tables. I made my whole site this way before.
For some reason I just can't get it to work on any new document. My old index.png with all the slices works just fine.
Beats me!!!!

I agree with Shane about using dreamweaver. Much more control over things.
It's been a while since I converted over to ImageReady.
but for now...When you exported your slices, did you rename the slice before export, defining the different image states? Possibly in the behaviors pallet.
It is easy to accidently export the different images to a file with the same name because of the slice option. Be sure to have the object pallet open while exporting to view the slice names and see what is being exported. (uncheck auto name slices and rename) You can "save optimized as" a single slice and give it a unique name each time. A bit of extra work but more control. Also be sure to adjust your file names in the HTML to reflect the new image(slice) names.
Dreamweaver has a great tool for creating these rollovers, I think called "Nav Bar".
To use this just create your image file and it's different rollover states on different layers in Photoshop, ImageReady or Fireworks. Turn the layers on and off as you need before export and once again be sure to change your slice names each time.
I hope this helps you out. If this hasn't confused you and/or you need extra explaining let me know. Happy to Help.

Take a few minutes to try out dreamweaver and get to know it's basic controls. Perhaps I can walk you through doing a rollover via fireworks-dreamweaver.
1. Create an 'up' image in fireworks. 2. Draw a slice around the image. 3. Export that image and name it (for example, your 'home' button, "home_up.gif" or "home_up.jpg") 4. Now make whatever changes you need to the 'up' button to turn it into your 'down' button. (or, if you're accustomed to it, use fireworks' frames feature to do these steps) 5. Export the 'down' slice and name it accordingly ("home_down.gif")
Now in dreamweaver....
1. Click the 'insert rollover image' button (should be top right on your 'common' toolbar). 2. You can name the image if you like. The 'original image' is the 'up' image, the 'rollover image' will be your 'down' image. And, the 'URL to go to when clicked' box should be whatever page that link is supposed to point to.
Note: if you're using frames, you have to tell dreamweaver what frame the link points to after you do this step.
OK, I hope that helps you. There are several other ways to do this as well, this is just the one that works best for me.

Thanks guys but I know it works, I've just clicked something somewhere. I don't have time to learn Dreamweaver right now.
Will Dreamweaver let me take a graphical button and make the rollovers or just use generic rectangular buttons and text rollovers? Everything I've ever done in Dreamweaver just didn't work the way I wanted it too.
I'll figure it out somehow.

Amy, Dreameaver doesn't make rollover images or buttons, it just writes the HTML to make them work.
You still have to create the different states of the rollover image, which is where Fireworks comes in, or Adobe ImageReady (if you have photoshop you have imageready) is what I prefer for this task.
If you know how to decipher HTML and/or javascript, you can look at the HTML source and see what images are or are not being loaded properly.
My guess is that Fireworks is calling the same exact image for both states, when there are in fact two different images that are used.

Maybe I should clarify.......I know how rollovers work. I want them to work they way they are supposed to when I create them in Fireworks so when I import them into Dreamweaver they code is written automatically.
I don't want to make a bunch of different images. Fireworks does that by converting to symbols (buttons). But for some reason that I still can't figure out, it's not working anymore.
I have obviously changed a setting or something but I have yet to find it.
If anyone has ideas on how to use Fireworks in the manner it is meant to be used I'd appreciate it.
I do appreciate the replies received but I want my issue fixed, not a work around.
Thanks!

Amy, I just recently redid my site using dreamweaver fireworks, and I used fireworks to do the page template. I created rollover buttons by doing this: Choose new button. In that window, I would draw out the size rectangle I need for a button, color it, and then go to the next state, copy up graphic, then add a color to that. After that, I would add what effects and text to the buttons. Then export the graphics. It automatically slices them for easier loading. Make sure that you export to the folder for your website images, and that the link to those images is right. I hope this helps some.
