I just finished an hdu sign backed with mdo for my shop.(I know mdo is not the best way to rienforce hdu but thats how it was done). I dont do much installing so I was hoping to get some help. I'm not sure stud mounting is the way to go on wood siding? could I use some type of hangar?

Very cool sign and very nice work. Now to do it justice when you mount it. Most of our HDU signs that will be flat mounted are not backed with MDO but no worries. I usually screw through the front with deck screws and then touch up the heads with the same color backgound paint. Since you have it backed I would pre-drill as Steve P suggested but I wouldn't use vinyl over the heads I would just paint them. Another way to go is using "L" brackets. If you used 1 1/2 or 2 inch foam and I assume 1/2 MDO then you just need to find "L" brackets that are long enough but not too long. You have several flat spots top and bottom on your design and that would be the place to position your brackets. Place your sign on the wall and pencil mark(small) where the bottom two brackets will go. Then install the first bracket with the L going up so it will be concealed behind the sign. Install your second bottom bracket using a level to make sure your brackets are level. Now you can sit your sign on the bottom brackets and mark you locations for the top brackets. Pull the sign down and install the top brackets and then place the sign and screw into the edge through your brackets. I ususally like to use brass screws here since they don't rust or corrode. This way you don't have to drill through the face of such a good looking sign! Best of luck. Thanks for sharing your work.
