I haven't done paper banners in about 10 years. And these are 99" by 170".....I was used to 4' by 8' back in the day. I've been in the mood to pick up a brush anyway....just did an awesome trumplio(?) mural on my shop wall (think Adriane would even like it) Anyway I'm clueless. I'm so familiar with -good-better-best pricing on alumilite or mdo panels, paint or vinyl, air-brush or one stroke but I have no idea how to price these. Is there a typical price per sq. ft. -plain or splash? And aren't these over sized? I've done billboards but not paper ones. I want the project but not because I'm the cheepest! Any help appreciated. Thanks Robin

OP, for a panel of that size, do you hang the blank paper on a big empty wall, or perhaps lay it out on the floor and work with sock feet, or what? Seems like the size would add extra time to the job, so you would ask a little more for the job? Never done anything like this, just curious. Vic G

Robin, i'm just curious about what the paper signs are for? personally, i'd price it like a window splash if its a casual layout, and price it like a vinyl banner if its more involved. (i'd just remove my cost of the vinyl banner material, but leave my profit on the banner material). as for the size being more difficult,... well, you're really only going to be painting a 4' wide piece (unless you've got a source for 99" wide paper).
yes, it has to match up, but that's not such a big deal.

I found 107" by 36' paper thru Dick Blick Art Materials. And yes I plan on making a faux wall from 1 by 3 firing strips and coroply or insulation with and possibley a rolling thingie at the top (read some past post on paper signs). Fiance' is an engineer....I always make life a challange. The size I think should make the price higher. But I intend to paint "one stroke" and give it a little splash....I'd like to get in the door with these people, they do liquidations so maybe I'll go $3 sq. ft. to get in. I'm still debating on paints....love One shot for this but need faster drying time and I've only used Ronan waterbased acrylic and don't like the flow....any ideas on a good flowing water based? Thanks, robin

vic didnt see the size....never did any paper signs that big.....as for paint robin..get ONE SHOT POSTER PAINT or get the POWDERED TEMPRA, and then add water....iam sure these are not going outside....also you can paint real well with those foam brushes from 1 inch to 4 inch.

Paper banners like these don't have to be done in one piece. I would stress to the customer that handling sheets this size will be cumbersome. They will be responsible for any wrinkling, damage, etc. Do not mention it will be easier for you...
I have used paper used for backdrops and found it to be awkward to work with. It is very "thick" for paper and tears easily once it starts.
I would not recommend the use of any kind of water color for paper banners. I am not crazy about the way that it wrinkles and puckers the paper.I see no real advantage regarding the drying times. This is my personal opinion...
Let us know how the job goes and post some pics when you are done.
Have a great one!

i haven't done a LOT of paper banners, but the few i've done with the 1-shot poster paints dried very quickly. usually the paint was dry within and hour at most. (after all, most of the solvent absorbs into the paper and so it dries from both top and bottom).
as for pricing, i wouldn't charge any less than the price for a typical window splash, and i REALLY wouldn't cut a liquidator any special deals. they'll expect the same price for future work. since your banners are about 100 square feet, i'm guessing i'd charge about $3.25 to $3.75 sq. foot (depending on the amount of copy and the amount of detail).
A tip i picked up here: tell them they'll get every tenth poster for free, rather than giving them 10 percent off each poster.
By the way, does anybody know what the wholesale price for outdoor digital on paper costs? this banner is about the size the billboard companies print. that would be a good starting point.

I must mention (Scooter...from reading a past post) that I too am replacing someone that past away that used to do these...and I'll quote you "probably from doing them too cheep". I went $3 to get in & he already cut his order in half, we'll talk more tomorrow he said.
I will ask if the paper was all one piece because I'd prefer to just go 48" by 16' flat on a make shift table and use chalk broke in the width of my letters for a layout (my first "ole-timer" taught me that)I sure don't want the hastle of that kind of papers problems unless it's a must. So I'll see what he has to say tomorrow but I won't die painting cheep banners.
Thanks,Robin
