It’s clear a that a number of contributors to this BB have an interest in motor sport and will probably know, only too well, that Sammy Miller was recently killed in a accident unrelated to drag racing. I hope I’m not being too maudlin or sentimental if I say a belated thank-you to him and love and best wishes to his family and friends.
His runs in the Vanishing Point rocket FC were the most awesome thing I have seen on any raceway or track. Over too fast to comprehend as it happened – yet the impressions swamped me (and still do) as my mind replayed the unbelievable spectacle. Sammy was one of the very bravest.
My cousin, Pete Roberts, and myself made a lot of motor sport recordings during the late seventies and we were lucky enough to capture Sammy’s first 300mph pass outside of the States. I’m sure it would be of interest to anyone who never had a chance to see one of his runs and will bring back very warm memories to those who did. Along with many eloquent written tributes, the recording is available for download at: web page
Recorded at the top end just a couple of yards short of the finish – from blast-off to crescendo equals the ET in real-time. Apologies for the quality, compressing from 19Meg to 780Kb has an effect.
