A friend sent this to me.....It seems after a wind storm in San Francisco recently, a Wall Dog sign from the 50's was uncovered! The Shasta people then had a contest to find the original artist from the 1950's! If you knew who it was, you got $10,00 dolars and free cases of Shasta pop! Seems they found who, but now, there has been a snafu with the wall, I billboard company started painting a Nike Ad over the Historic Shasta Ad! Here's the link...

Hey Mike,

This is Interesting. I see that they found the
culprit, in making the announcment as well.
I worked with a bunch of dogs from around that
time at Diamond Signs, and Adway Signs in
San Jose. They all made their way to the
valley when the housing boom started and the
money was flowing. I apprenticed under some
wooley vets and learned a lot about billboards
and doggin'.
It was a time when YOU HAD TO EARN RESPECT if
you were on the other end of the plank and
handiling the tie off.
Man, what ever happened to all them patterns.
There's a guy...Ted Maddox, who lives in
Watsonville, Ca., who probably would know who
did it. More than likely there would have been
a crew of at least 4 people on that job.

The artwork was probably done in a Foster &
Kleiser, studio in Oakland,Ca under the
watchful eye of a great designer who,s last
name was "WARD".
My neighbor has 30 of the early "WARD", show
card design panels behind glass, of billboard
presentations from the 40's and 50's. A couple
may be from the 30's.
These are art pieces today.
I will be digitally recording them for the
future.

Interesting post Mike! Is this an indication that the public is starting to become more aware of advertising art and the history that we, as Letterheads, value so much?

I've contacted Shasta via e-mail informing them about The Letterhead Movement. In addition, I included a bunch of links to past meets. Especially WallDog Meets. If anyone reading this is new to Letterville, you'll enjoy looking back at some of our past meets too. Here's a page with links to almost all of them.
