About 6 years ago I lettered a boat name with SignGold computer cut film instead of the traditional gold leaf method. I saw the job the other day and it looked OK. Keep in mind that this boat name was subject to Florida sun, salt water and repeated washing and waxing. I had done this same person's previous boat in hand-applied gold leaf and after 3 years it needed major refurbishing. My conclusion - the SignGold is more durable but the gold color seemed to dull out and lose it's luster; also there was some minor delamination on the top edge of the film, even though the edges were clear coated. Because SignGold is so easy I still prefer to use it as my first choice for boat names. However, in a perfect world where time and money are not factors, the traditional gold leaf would be my first choice for looking good.

Hi Jean..
(man, that's almost as bad as the "shimp boat" pun...)

Any chance you could get me a photo of the boat? I'd be curious to see about the color fading and edge-delamination?

I'm glad that you're generally pleased with SignGold, but if I can troubleshoot what's been happening, and make you all the happier....that'd be better yet!

Thank You,

Bob - Believe it or not I started my business over 20 years ago doing mostly hand painted boat names and I call my enterprise "Shimp Boats".

Brian - I'll try to get some good close-ups of the lettering with my 35mm camera. E-mail me your address so I can send them regular mail.
