Hello everyone, I recently recieved a job for decals to be placed on fiberglass truck hoods for a manufacturer. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in printing the decals for me. The logo is already designed in Signlab Colormaster 5.0 and does have conical and gradient fills. The decal size is 2.5"x5" and uses 3 colors blue/red/black. I will need quotes on 1000, 2000 and 3000. I am not too familliar with the process of edge printing , but I believe the file is set up right. (I hope) If anyone is interested I will email you the file and you can check it out. My email addy is ugraph@adelphia.net
Thanks, Ryan Ursta
PS. Sorry if this isnt the right place to post this?

hi there...well to be perfectly honest...i would say your best bet might be to get some screen printing quotes for doing that many decals. the thing with the edge is that your materials really don't go down in price significantly even if you're producing quanities. i use my edge quite a bit...i just did 500 decals for a snowmobiling club at $1.75/ea 3 1/2" circles 4 color process...actually i sold them to a fellow sign person who in turn sold them for $2.50 each...my opinion is that the edge is great for short run stuff and of course truck lettering, 4 color process and such but for something like 3000 i would check out a few avenues. just my humble opinion of course. good luck

Thanks for your replies. What kind of durability can i expect if i have the decals screened instead of edge printed? The customer did state that they wanted digital prints specifically. Also would the fills/gradients show up in a screened decal as well as an edge print would? (excuse my ignorance I dont know much about screenprinting)
To all that i've sent the file to: I could not send a signlab file, because when opened the gradient fills would not show up ??? Why this is I dont really know. So i've sent it out as an adobe illustrator 8.0 file in .EPS format. Hopefully this works.
Thanks, Ryan Ursta

Ryan, screenprinted gradients come out real nice, especially if the printer uses a finer mesh screen to do it.
Judging from the edge work I see around town here and my experiences using screen inks on vinyls, I'd have to say screenprinted stuff will be more durable. I've seen thermal transfer prints wearing off from occassional abrassion but I've never been able to damage screen ink without destroying the vinyl underneath it - the bond there is just too strong.
If your job requires a custom die to cut a custom contour, you could be looking at some coin.. although it could be possible for you to create artwork so you could cut the contours on your vinyl cutter then cut the material into sheets so when the printer gets it he can register it with the screens.
On the otherhand, I hear 4 color process screenprinting is tough, so if you need 4 color process stuff, an edge print might be easier to control.. although a good screenprinter will know how to set it up right.
