I thought I had everything figured out when I started downloading my digital pictures onto my laptop. I print from the laptop but now these guys are wanting shirts with pictures of their cars. I did this with no problems when I downloaded all the pictures to my main computer but I can't get the picture tranfered from my laptop to the main computer to do the shirt. I use Gerber Edge with the LT foils and my laptop will not run the equipment. I have to make the picture so small in order to put it on a disk that I lose the clear picture to put on the shirt. I have to enlarge it too much after I transfer it. I only have a DVD and a 3.5 disk drive on my laptop. Is there a way to tranfers the pictures from my laptop on to the PC directly? What would I need to do it. Thanks for all your help.

Bob, I must not have made myself clear. I have a CD burner for my home or main computer, but all I have for my laptop is a DVD. HP tells me they do not have a CD burner for this laptop but I don't understand why I can't connect a portable CD burner on to it. I am not good with laptop but I put my own cd burner with a SCSI card into my main computer.

Easiest thing would be to set up a wireless network betwen your main puter and laptop! You can then transfer pictures and data back and forth, quickly and easily, without a lot of plugging and unplugging.
Just my $.02 worth {$.03 Cn)

There must be an external CD burner available, but, being a GEEZER, these modern contraptions get BY me! The last time I tried that, I couldn't find one for my 8086, so I gave up!

You might just want to get a transfer or crossover cable. They usually plug into your serial port or, parallel port If you go the serial route, make sure you get one that specifies it's a crossover cable. I've had bad experiences trying to get normal serial cables to work. Not sure if you can use any parallel cable or not. They have 'em at any computer place. It's probably the cheapest way to go.

Cynthia. I don't know if you have an ethernet card on your main computer, but if your laptop has a DVD player then it is fairly new and will probably have an internal ethernet card. If both do then all you need is a crossover cable and you can network the two together for transfering info from the laptop to the main computer. That is how mine is set up.
You can also use the method that Roger mentioned. It uses a special parallel file transfer cable and you just set up windows so that one computer is the host and one the guest. Works fine, I used to use that before I got my network set up.
Both methods are WAY cheaper than buying an external CD burner for the laptop. I would estimate that networking, even if you had to install an ethernet card in the main puter, would be less than $35 U.S. and the parallel file transfer method would only cost $10.
I don't know what kind of memory card your camera uses but mine has a SmartMedia card and I use a "card reader" that fits into my 3.5" floppy drive. I can load pictures to either of my computers using this method.
By the way...my camera has a 64 meg memory card so I can use that same "reader/floppy" (which, with that 64 meg card inserted, is a 64 meg floppy disk)and could load a 64 meg picture, which would be huge, onto it from the laptop and then put the "floppy" into the drive on the main computer to transfer it. THAT method would also work even if your camera didn't use a SmartMedia card. BUT it would be the most expensive method.

Before I was networked, I had bough an external CF reader. I could then use my Compact Flash cards to transfer large files from my laptop to my computer. Networking is much better though.

Along the lines of what Si said, if you have an ethernet board in both machines you should be able to plug them together and get a peer ot peer network. There are some settings that have to be made so that files will share between the computers, and you can also share peripherals including the printer - that is, you can print from the desk machine through the laptop if the laptop is on. Ethernet boards cost almost nothing, but it really helps to have a techie to get the initial setup going. Vic G

This is for general info because not every one knows about this.
Windows has a utility to transfer files from one computer to another using the printer port. All u need is a parallel port cable that has the same male connector on both ends. About $10 at wally world.
Using the ethernet cards peer to peer more complicated. You have to add in tcp/ip protocall and maybe netbui too. Your NIC card driver disk will usually set this all up for you. Then you must "share your drives by going to 'mycomputer/ right click on the 'c' drive and half way down u see 'sharing'.. click it and tick in the 'shared as' spot. that shares the drive over the network.
The easy utility is called "direct cable connection". It works one way from the host to the client. You decide which machine will be host and which one will be client each time u start the utility. Its very easy and reasonable speed. I use it all the time when I work on a computer. Goto control panel / add remove programs/ windows setup/ communications and check the direct cable connection box. it will load of yer windows disk.
Its so easy my wife used once and she is in no way a computer geek. (Geek is computer terms is a kewl name).
