I've got a wedding coming up in mid November and I'd like to make a gift with the couples name on it. I want to use this as an opportunity to learn something new. If it doesn't work out I can always get them something from their wedding registry at Sears - boring! I thought about making a HDU sign, an antiqued plaque or a glass sign, but I thought I'd run this by all you idea people to see what interesting ideas & techniques you come up with. What would you make?

I'd make 'em a nice sandblasted sign for their yard or porch or wherever it would look best. There is something about the permanance of their names etched into the board that is appealing to folks who are looking for longevity in their new endeavor...
Just my humble vote...

I just bought a 5 gallon glass water bottle and etched/gold leafed it. That way they can throw their change in it and when it's full buy what they want.
Here are some picts. They aren't great but you get the idea.

I had a wedding this summer to go to with the same problem. I wanted to be origional. I tool a piece of glass and put their names and date, with a simple design i found in some clip art on it (in reverse) with varigated gold leaf and a maroon outline, made a qyick and simple frame out of 1" pine boards and mounted it with a mirror behind the glass. It was a huge hit, one erson who saw it had me make just a name for a friend of hers who had a baby. JAKE

Someone posted a pic a while back that I thought was extremely nice. I think it was a hallway mirror and they put the new couples names and a nice design with etchmark vinyl. It looked like etched glass and it was very tastefully done. I think one of those antique-looking entry mirrors with the hooks on the bottom would be a great gift.

Thanks for the ideas. Amy I love that glass jar idea. I am pulling however to a glass sign. I've never applied gold leaf before so I think I want to try that. I'm kind of a copper/bronze person myself so I think I may try copper leaf instead. It is also alot cheaper to experiment with. Is it much different to use? Jake I think I might pick up on your idea of using a mirror behind the glass. I'm tossing the idea of enclosing some blown glass wheat along the sides because the couple are both taking agriculture in University. Suelynn you will probably know what I mean - the glass wheat made by a lady from Southey - I can't remember her name. I think that with a brown toned mirror behind it would look great. Does this sound crass to you? If I post my layout here will you guys critique it? Like I said I want this to be a learning experience. Thanks for your help so far. Kel

Old Paint...way I heard it was, put a penny in every time during the first year, and take one out for every time thereafter. Saying goes the jar will never empty.

We made toasting glasses for some friends who got married.
Bruce did a real cool design and cut it out of vinyl, with it inside a much larger square. We got a cool pair of stemmed glasses, then put the vinyl on the sides.
I used etching cream from the craft store and etched them. The extra vinyl gives you plenty of space to not worry about overflow. You just have to be real careful to watch that it doesn't creep down the sides and onto the unprotected glass.
For our wedding, Bruce printed out our invitation design and date on vinyl and attached to a larger sheet of lightweight celtec, or something like that. We set it out at the gift/card table with sharpee markers and had people sign messages.

I would try the copper, probably look awesome. I messed up by forgetting to get a picture. The mirror adds a neat shadow effect to it, also i left a small (.1 inches) between the letters and the outline so the mirror showed through there. any way if you have any questions feel free to call oe e-mail and i will try to help. Let me know how it comes out.

We just had a wedding a few weeks ago for a dear old friend of mine, like a brother to me. I bought a truck, beat it up, sprayed it matte black, then painted their name & date in western style fonts (western wedding and their living room is done in western stuff). I scuffed some of the paint off in spots and cleared it. This may be a little pricier than you wanted to go or more involved, but he's like a brother to me and they're starting off in a mobile home so they can use the storage space.
I've also done crackled signs with the name & date. I like the water jug idea. I've never seen a glass one though. Where do you find the glass ones?
