We recently purchased a 4'x8' portable, internally illuminated marquee sign. Several of our repeat customers have asked us to rent them on their behalf. We thought it would also come in handy for a temp sign for clients who have ordered new sign installations from us. Has anyone out there come up with a reasonable rental rate and rental agreement that provides protection for theft, dmg, etc? Thanks

Tony, 30 some years ago when we did a little of this, our target price was 10% of the purchase price per month. That price included our labor and material to keep the product in good order. You might also check with your insurance agent about the disaster case. Those things do get stolen and mowed down by runaway vehicles. I suppose they could also be towed away if illegally parked.
You might drop by a tool rental place and get a catalog. Compare rental prices to new purchase prices, and that may give you a better feel about markups. Compare to ladders and things like that, that do not require a lot of maintenance unless abused. Vic G

I have considered the same thing and also the big black neon colored lettered readerboards. I counted over 50 of them on one road in a bigger town a while back and in my small town there were about a half dozen and they were rented at a place 45 miles from our town. I called the guy anf he never returned my call (I didn't use my shop phone), so bad service. It seems like bonus money with little work.
