Using Signlab 5.0 It will only import one element in a file...the preview windows shows the the entire design..whats wrong? I'm in the middle of a job and desperate. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim, Is it a "Adobe Illustrator" file you are trying to import?. I have trouble importing them all the time. I end up importing into Corel and then exporting as "EPS" or sending straight to Signlab.

Sometimes if you export a file from Corel and you do not have the text converted to curves, SignLab does not recognize the text. There is a check box for this in the export menu.
Without knowing what kind of file you're trying to import, I'll just take a guess...
If it's a .ai file or a .eps file and you have it in Corel Draw for an example, select everything you had previously exported and see if it tells you it's a group. If it is, ungroup everything. Then export it again and see if it all is there is SignLab.
Sometimes SignLab won't recognize fills from other programs - especially if your color pallets from one program to the next are different. If the ungroup idea doesn't work, remove the fill and just export the text and objects.
Converting the text to curves and or removing fills before exporting is the most likely solution from my experience.

Hey Jim,
I had one of those today. With the many versions of EPS, there are times when only an older version of EPS will work.
With the one I had today, I had to Ungroup all objects first.
Then, with color turned off, select each object one at a time, or Shift-Select groups of objects and assign a color to them.
On text items, I had to select the letters, assign them a color, and then had to select the centers of "O's, B's, P's", etc. "Group" them, assign them White and then "Weld" them to the rest of the text.
In some cases a couple of objects had to have "Make Path" set.
Thankfully it was only a job for some 18x24 yard signs.
I have seen the problem you describe often with Signlab 5.0. It happens with both AI and EPS files that come from other programs. I have developed several work arounds to avoid it. Usually I import the file into Signlab 3.2 or 4.95 (the full file will come into those) then I save it as a CDL file, take that file to Signlab 5.0. I have also brought the file into Corel 8, ungrouped everythng, exported it as a Corel build AI file, then inported the new AI file into Signlab.
I hope one of these worksfor you. One of these days I am going to call Cadlink and find out why 5.0 can't import foreign AI files correctly.
